REVISITING THE LOCATION RESULTS - ADDING PANORAMA

in #idaho7 years ago

A couple weeks ago I wrote this post about how I was going to Idaho Falls and photographing the same location and we would see if the winter look with the addition of Panorama skills would benefit me. Time to share a couple of those pictures.

Gotta click and check out the 4k version of the panorama

IT'S REALLY HARD TO BEAT THE FALL COLORS

This shot was from years previous but I was back in town and even though it wasn't the best sunset with the best snow cover I gave it a shot

A CLOSER LOOK
To be fair let's zoom in to that first image which is of course a huge panorama

p.s. Even this cropped version is still 56MegaPixel

So what's the verdict?

Great pictures .. I loved that
good job . You have talent
Thank you for sharing your day with us‏

Wow
Nice view and
Good capture

I have to ask where you got your name. I grew up in a small village called Jarvie in Alberta, Canada. The village is only about 100 people. I don't think I've ever seen the name on the internet without going looking for it. I'm curious how you decided on that name.

Nice pictures too by the way. I honestly just picked your latest post to ask about your name but those are some nice shots.

Oh no way!!! I totally knew there was a town and was thinking of visiting some day. Jarvie is my last name... scottish origins. I go by my last name mostly. Scott Jarvie is the full name.

I would love to knoe more about the town. Where do you live now?

I'm in Edmonton now. My grandmother, parents and siblings all still live in Jarvie so I still end up out there quite a bit to visit. I may move back some day too. Honestly I am sick of the city. It would be nice to move back.

I can tell you what I know about the town. Jarvie is a stop along the railroad. It started out in the early 1900's (1913 or 1914). The steam powered trains needed to make stops for coal and water. Jarvie was one of those stops. There are small towns about every 15 min. travelling at highway speed and they all started as stops along the train tracks.

Someone started a lumber mill at Jarvie beside the river. They built the train tracks close to the mill so they were able to ship lumber using the train. People started homesteading in the area to farm and to work at the lumber mill. There was a grain elevator next to the train tracks for farmers to bring their crops. The grain elevators are gone in most towns. They went to a larger more centralized storage facility. For better or worse, it seems to be the way they do things these days.

My great grandfather moved to the area and apprenticed under a butcher at the local butcher shop. The butcher shop eventually turned into a general store and in the end my great grandfather ended up owning it. My grandfather and two of his brothers took over the store when my great grandfather passed away and they ran the store until they retired. The store is no longer in the family but still exists. It's one of the last businesses in the community.

The store carried everything. They had hydraulic hoses and fittings, appliances, all kinds of hardware, and a respectable selection of groceries. They even kept some veterinary medications. My grandfather and uncles were all butchers, my grandfather repaired chainsaws and televisions (when they still had vacuum tubes), my one uncle was good with heating and air conditioning (you could buy a furnace and all the ducting at the store), and my other uncle farmed and did the accounting for the store (the store owned a small amount of farmland). The store had to have what the farmers needed or they would just drive to the nearest big town to get groceries and parts that they needed on the farm. I'm still amazed when I think back to everything that they stocked in the store.

There hasn't been a lumber mill in Jarvie as long as I've been alive. I don't know when it shut down. The community was mostly a farm community. The town used to have the junior high school for the area, grades 7-9. It just recently shut down due to lack of students. Small farms are becoming a thing of the past. As farmers retire they sell their farms to large farming operations and their children move away, usually to a city or town. All the small town schools are shutting down. Some children ride the bus for two hours or more to get to school because there aren't enough children to justify having a school closer. It makes me wonder about the future of Jarvie and the other small towns.

The town will probably never disappear completely. There are enough people that work away from home for a week at a time that they can live anywhere. The town is far enough away from the city to still have cheap housing. It's too far to commute to Edmonton but Westlock is close and some people commute there to work. Westock is a town of about 10,000 and is about 1/2 hour south of Jarvie. Jarvie will always be a good place for people that want be in town without being in a busy city.

It was great growing up. Children can play around town with minimal supervision. Everyone knows each other. My nephews take off on their bikes and play around town by themselves. They can go visit my mom and dad or their cousins or friends. The Pembina river runs next to Jarvie. Growing up I used to go fishing quite a bit down at the river. There is a creek that feeds into the river. It made for a good fishing spot. If you have children Jarvie is a great place to raise them.

I don't know off hand where the name Jarvie came from. I actually spent some time looking. I can only assume that somewhere along the way there was a person with the last name Jarvie that named the town. I can't find any record of it though. I have a Jarvie history book but it doesn't mention where the name came from. Google didn't help either.

I wouldn't recommend Jarvie as a tourist stop. There is no where to stay and not a lot to see. It was a great town to grow up in though and I love going back to visit. The store is still there but has changed into more of a convenience store. They have some groceries but probably not a lot more than you'd find at a 7-11. They cook fresh bread and have a little café. New people are trying to find a new way to be successful. I'm just happy that there is still a store.

There you go. That's probably more than you asked for lol. I love the place. What can I say.

Family Photo Jarvie.jpg

This is a photo taken in my mom and dad's backyard. It is me, my mom's parents, my mom, and my siblings with their children. The picture is a few years old.

Dude! This was awesome!! I'll have to share it with some relatives. Maybe@sjarvie5 will see it too.

This would make a great post but I'll do a full upvote here as well.

Thanks for the read I feel some sort of connection now. Maybe I'll find my way up there this year.

I just thought I'd give you an update. I was out at my parents last weekend and looked in the original history book for Jarvie. I only have volume 2, my parents have the first book. It actually said that Jarvie was originally named Jarvis but the post office didn't want to confuse the town with another town named Jarvis in eastern Canada so they renamed our town Jarvie to differentiate between the two. We still ended up with your name but not quite how I thought.

It would be great if you made your way up but don't get your hopes up too much. It's a cool little town but it's far from a travel destination. It's a pretty average little prairie town. I'd feel bad if you made a special trip thinking there'd be lots to see. It's mostly just a collection of houses built close to the railroad tracks. I have some special feelings for the place because I grew up there but it's not a lot different from any other small prairie town.

Haha k

If I'm in edmonton which is likely it isnt tpo far right?

It's 150 km north of Edmonton, about an hour and a half drive. It's not a crazy distance but I've been driving it most of my life so it just seems normal to me.

WOW! I like panoramis pictures, and your work is amazing :-) Did you use panoramic head?

Yeah I have actually been doing enough that I finally did end up getting a panoramic head.
I'm loving it and can use it pretty quickly for everyday shots.

Great post as always ;)

wow really that's a amazing photography. thanks for @jarvie

They are all awesome shots. I love the zoomed in one of the panorama.

Oh awesome glad you did... sometimes it takes a while to load. Did it?

No it loaded straight away for me with no dramas.

Amazing beautiful capturing. Are there any other waterfalls around there?

Nice post

Well, I think we still have to give the Overall Impression edge to the original - those colours make all the difference.

However, the detail in the lines of the water passing over the edge is beautiful!!! You could crop in to just the waterfall and I would be happy. It's like the tesseract scene from Interstellar.

Yeah it's kinda hard to beat the fall colors. But at least I have a "winter Option" now
