David Ben Kay on TV-TWO & The Blockchain’s Future

in #ico7 years ago

We’re constantly humbled to have such strong support from our followers and advisors, and our latest AMA saw Jan and Philipp joined by one of TV-TWO’s biggest advocates: blockchain expert and veteran lawyer, our advisor, David Ben Kay.

A former US lawyer who spent 30 years in China, David worked as general counsel at Microsoft China — in charge of IP, legal and government relations — before joining Vitalik Buterin as the Ethereum Foundation’s legal counsel.

We were delighted that David was able to jump on Skype and join us all the way from sunny Malaysia, to give us an insight into not only on what he thinks the long term potential for TV-TWO is, but also how he believes blockchain technology will evolve.

You can watch the full video below, or on our Facebook page. Also read on to check out a few of the key points we felt were worth flagging:

What DBK looks for when choosing to support a new startup

“Is the project interesting? It’s important to understand why the company is using the blockchain. Is there a good business reason?

“I want to work with people who have a very clear vision of what they’re doing and where they’re going. But they can’t be arrogant, they need to be open to different and often contrary ideas and interested in understanding where their vision may lead.”

DBK on TV-TWO

“‘Disruptive’ is so overused, but TV-TWO is disruptive in the truest sense. TV-TWO has a compelling story as to why you’re doing this on the blockchain. Being able to hook into 700 million Smart TVs and bringing blockchain tech into the home, is a very persuasive argument.

“I also liked the fact you were doing an Interactive Coin Offering. There are so many ICOs now, but what TV-TWO brought to the table was consistent with the underlying philosophy of the blockchain.”

DBK On Working With The Ethereum Foundation

“Ethereum was particularly interesting because of smart contracts. From a lawyer’s’ perspective, it had enormous appeal on a philosophical level. Everyone who came to the foundation would see what the implications were for a range of different industries — agriculture, medicine, etc. We knew it’d take time to develop and for there to be the expertise to develop it, but it was an extraordinary next step. For me it’s even more fun to have these visions actualised and spread by different people.”

DBK On The Future Of The Blockchain

“Government attitudes to ICOs and cryptocurrencies don’t necessarily reflect attitudes to the blockchain as a technology.

“I think we’re seeing a global trend of anti-bureaucracy; of people wanting to deal directly with other people rather than have institutions — like governments and financial institutions — interfere.

“Blockchain tech is going to have an extraordinary impact on democracy, in how governments operates, in being more transparent about what they do and the impact on people. We’re still at the very beginning. It’s super exciting.”
