Lets first discuss the old methods of Cold Chain supply management and what are the drawbacks? The conventional cold chain is basically manually managed, its prone to human error and fraud. There is no way to track the condition and safety of the food items during the transportation from farm to the retailer. In recent years, the retailers have suffered losses worth billions of dollars due to damaged food stuff, billions more for returned goods and replacement. The food related illnesses cost tens of billions of dollars every year. The big retailers spend huge sums of money in building their brand, it also takes years to establish trust among the consumers but it can happen that a defective food product is delivered to a well-known retailer and once its sold to the consumers, the defect is noticed, that can ruin the reputation of the retailer causing huge losses of revenue and it may take years to rebuild the trust. All this is happening when the retailers are under tremendous pressure from the governments to comply with the standards of food safety and transparency.

There are several examples that a certain disease broke out because of substandard or contaminated food sold at some large retailer which literally forced the well-established retailers to shut down their operations causing billions of dollars in losses apart from human lives lost due to the foodborne disease outbreak. The retailer gets punished but the persons who are responsible for this mess cannot be traced and the risk remains that the same problem may be repeated. Since the traditional cold chain is entirely handled manually, its very much possible that the food gets defrosted during transportation and frozen again but in the mean time the food may get rotten or even may get infected that can cause serious health problem to the consumers and the tragedy is there is no way to monitor this situation.
