INTRODUCTION:
Facebook has allegedly been on the news for compromising on subscriber’s data privacy; since 2014. The compromised data which were unlawfully obtained and processed by third parties were sold at a profit without considering the plight of the data owners. The end users of such data can make it serve a purpose contrary to the disposition of the data owners; all because they were not in control of its usage. Do not forget that for your personal data to be on such social media;
- You spent money to be connected on the internet
- You made out time out of your busy schedule to upload such data
- You were promised that your data privacy will be upheld
- Your stay on such platform impacts positively on the fund generation, etc.
So what have you done wrong to deserve such treatment?

Scenarios like this has prompted organizations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union to regulate such excesses in personal data handling; ensuring that the utilization of such data, goes according to the owner’s consent and directive.
The GDPR will ensure that the respective organizations will protect and handle personal data carefully; provide subscribers with the ways to control, monitor, and if desired; withhold information he/she wouldn’t want to share. To enforce such directives; the GDPR is promoting;
Anonymisation (removal of identifiable information from the data, traceable to you),
Pseudonymisation (the ability to put back the separated and anonymised data together),
Encryption (translation of such data into forms or codes such that unauthorized individuals are denied from accessing the sent data); amongst other measures.
This implies that data protections will involves protocols and communications that will be clear, concise and carried out with the owner’s consent. The implementation of such directives has been scheduled to commence from the 25th of May, 2018; with stiff penalties for defaulting organizations. These and many more have been aimed at ensuring that such data privacy were duly protected and only divulged at owner’s directive.
It was these directives that prompted the scaling of an existing organization called OPIRIA; into innovating, developing and deploying a value based system that will protect personal data privacy and still go the extra mile in empowering the data owners on deciding whom to share their data with.
