Crime is rampant in our society and what we need is a system that can handle it efficiently. Whenever we think of crime the first word that comes to our mind is police. From a young age, we have an image of the police force as officers that have the ability to protect and serve. Law enforcement is one of the important duties of this organization as it works towards keeping a country free from disturbing elements.

Times have changed and with the advancement of technology, we are facing crimes in the cyber world also. To deal with such crimes exclusively we have an additional unit called cyber police. I read an article where a couple was swindled of nearly three lakh rupees before they realized their mistake and went to the relevant authorities to report it. The husband received a message on his mobile that he had won a sum of fifty lakh rupees and in order to cash it he had to arrive at a certain place and claim it with proper documents. When he went there he was told that he had to pay one lakh rupees to transfer his winning amount from London to Chandigarh. He happily paid that amount and in the next meeting was told that he had to pay an additional two lakh rupees and he would be receiving a total of fifty-three lakh rupees. He paid the amount and after a few days, the contact number did not exist anymore and the man had no alternative but to go to the police. This happened quite a while back and with time cyber crimes have taken a much stronger hold on our society.

Unless and until our society recognizes cyber bullying for what it is, the suffering of thousands of silent victims will continue.

Today crime is not only about scams and money. Last year we came to know how a television channel was being blackmailed by a group of cyber-criminals. They had hacked several episodes of a popular serial Game of Thrones and were threatening to leak it if the channel failed to pay ransom money.
