Orvium - Powering Science And Technology Through The Blockchain

Project Introduction

In this article, I will be introducing a new blockchain project that has been created to use the innovation of the blockchain to provide solutions to the problems that exist in the scholarly publications industry. These are the problems which are hindering scientific progress and of which no viable solution is currently available.

This platform is called Orvium.

Problem Statement

The scientific research industry is one that receives a lot of attention and even a higher level of funding from both the private sector and the government. Science has been responsible for a lot of advancement in world technology and more research means more breakthroughs and more advancement in technology, which also means better living solutions to humans.

One major problem that exists in this industry is, there is a selected few who are in charge of publishing the results of scientific research. This current reality means that there is an oligopoly in the scientific publishing market and this small circle of top publishers has the power to influence the outcome of scientific advancements because they control the release of information, the way information gets released, how much and how easily it can be accessed.

The Orvium Solution

Orvium is a decentralized platform that aims to create a self-regulating scholarly publishing market. The platform is built on the Ethereum blockchain and in the quest to achieve a truly decentralized free-market that involves all the actors involved in the production publishing and reviewing of a complete, authentic and reliable scientific publication, Orvium is going to be integration together the blockchain and a few other technologies which are; 

"Cloud computing, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence" - whitepaper.

Resulting from the problem of oligopoly in this industry are other problems like the lack of transparency about the data source and research process for publications, which in turn creates problems of copyrights, ownership, and others. Millions of people contribute to scientific research and all these people are competing for spots and relevance from this centralized bodies rather than the scientific community as a whole.

Orvium aims to shifts this paradigm and creates a community that involves authors, researchers, reviewers, publishers and all the other actors in the industry, all interacting together in an open transparent system managed by a smart contract, to create the best scientific publications and one in which all the contributors are fairly rewarded for their inputs.

This platform will cause a series chain of events that will ultimately lead to improved ways of life for everyone through science and scientific progress.
