Lava tube exploration in Iceland 2017

in #iceland6 years ago (edited)

Hello, i'm quite new here but i want to share some quality content from the start, or at least i hope you perceive it as such :D

This summer i spent 3 months in Iceland, and a number of times me and my newly acquired friends went to explore lava tubes...
One might ask - but Elvis, what are lava tubes? is it dangerous?-

Lava tubes are natural formation in highly vulcanian active regions, such as Iceland. look at it as the veins that once were filled with molten rock, and at some point the lava flow ceased leaving tis long tunnel.
Dangerous? well anything can be, lets just say if you are claustrophobic this might be best seen thru pictures. main rule going thru this tubes is to not touch the walls as they are composed of layer and some might be loose and fall down.

This tube is located fairly near Þingvallavatn, anglicised as Thingvallavatn, and it's around 340 meters long teakes about 40-50 min to clear.

As said we completed this tube several times, and the best part is to get to the central area, sit down and turn off the lights, and boom total darkness no mater how long you stay there you won't see a thing as there is no light at all (you might see brain images of your hands or other stuff but is just your brain freaking out) This complete darkness and the sound of water falling from the roof can be quite a spiritual experience.

Off all the times i went there i took pictures only one and with my luck they came out ok.

There are different stories related to the cave and all dive in to folklore or take inspiration from old fairy tales.

This next picture is kinda and experiment, didn't expect much to come out as was hard to instruct ppl to not point the light towards the camera eheheheh

Too bad that on the first trip to the cave the transmission in the van broke, and lets just say you don't want this to happen after 22.00 on a deserted road that is out of any touristic route. And on the last visit one of my friends fell before entering the cave and hurt her ankle so she had to wait in the van for us to finish, but she was thrilled to see the pics i took :D

Hope this kind of content, with some background story is more interesting than me just posting pictures.
And please let me know your thoughts or suggestions. have questions? just ask :D
