Structure

  • Gate: The terminal that controls the conductivity between the source and drain. It is separated from the channel by a thin insulating layer of silicon dioxide (SiO2).
  • Source: The terminal through which carriers (electrons or holes) enter the channel.
  • Drain: The terminal through which carriers leave the channel.
  • Body (or Substrate): The bulk of the semiconductor material. It can be connected to a reference voltage.

Operation

The operation of a MOSFET is based on the electric field effect. When a voltage is applied to the gate, it creates an electric field that controls the flow of carriers between the source and drain, effectively turning the transistor on or off. MOSFETs can be either:

  • Enhancement Mode: Requires a positive gate voltage to turn on (n-channel) or a negative gate voltage to turn on (p-channel).
  • Depletion Mode: Conducts when the gate voltage is zero and requires a negative gate voltage (n-channel) or positive gate voltage (p-channel) to turn off.

Types

  1. N-Channel MOSFET: Uses electrons as charge carriers. More efficient for high-speed switching and lower on-resistance.
  2. P-Channel MOSFET: Uses holes as charge carriers. Typically used when the voltage supply is negative or in complementary logic circuits (CMOS technology).

Applications

  • Switching: Used in power supplies, motor controllers, and other switching applications due to their efficiency and fast switching speeds.
  • Amplification: Used in analog circuits, such as audio amplifiers and radio frequency amplifiers, to amplify weak signals.
  • Digital Logic: Integral to digital circuits and logic gates, forming the foundation of CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) technology used in microprocessors and memory devices.
