Once upon a time, I set out on a memorable journey to hike up to the renowned fortress in Hvar. The allure of the fortress had intrigued me for quite a while, and locals insisted it was a must-see. However, they cautioned against a midday ascent due to scorching heat and perilous conditions. So, I waited until 3pm in the Hostel before embarking on my trek. Despite the sweltering heat, the hike paled in comparison to my prior expeditions, notably the Grand Canyon and the future Negev Desert hike, which I'd elaborate on another time.
As I ascended, the panoramic view of the town, port, and surrounding islands grew more captivating. The fortress loomed closer, and upon arrival, I engaged in a brief conversation with the attendant, all while distant thunder hinted at potential rain. Undeterred, I opted to pay the entrance fee, granting me year-long access. Within the fortress, I envisioned its historical significance, visualizing how it once held strategic control over the port and sea.
Amidst its ancient walls and chambers, the prison left a lasting impression, evoking vivid images of its somber past. I carefully explored, even braving a narrow, treacherous stairway. Ultimately, I chose to witness the sunset from this historic vantage point, savoring the moment with a well-deserved beer at the fortress's restaurant.
