The beginning of weather modification and hurricane Harvey Part 1

The main objective of this post is to create awareness to this out of control weather and to trigger some thought provoking questions. If you haven't heard, cloud seeding is the most common form of weather modification currently employed globally.

What is cloud seeding you may ask? According to Wikipedia, cloud seeding is a form of weather modification. It's a way of changing the amount or type of precipitation that falls from the clouds. By dispersing chemicals into a focused part of the air, it creates cloud condensation or ice nuclei, which then alters the micro physical processes within the cloud.

But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, lets take a look back to 1902 and learn about Charles Mallory Hatfield, a sewing machine salesman in Los Angeles also known as the “Moisture Accelerator”.

Charles Mallory in his free time would play around with chemicals. By combining certain chemicals, he eventually came up with a method for producing rain. It wasn't too long after that Charles Mallory, the "moisture accelerator'', was asked to help San Diego county solve the problem of a bad drought they were experiencing.

He agreed to help and caused it to rain so much that it actually caused major flash floods for the county. The rain fell into Lake Morena and caused it to top 28 inches for all of January (San Diego had 7.56 inches for the month, at the time the most ever in January). Is it a coincidence that during that same time, it started to rain and flood other parts of California like Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Riverside and San Bernardino counties — and in Mexico?

Why is this part of history so important? Because it is common sense, that if one person could come up with a chemical combination to create cloud seeding, then what would stop newer science and technology from continuing to manipulate different types of weather, like a hurricane?

Now it is time to take a look at our current "natural disaster" in America, Hurricane Harvey. According to Wikipedia, Hurricane Harvey was the first major hurricane to make land fall in the United States.

In only four days, many areas received more than 40 inches of rain as the system meandered over eastern Texas and adjacent waters, causing catastrophic flooding. With peak accumulations of 51.88 inches, Harvey is the wettest tropical cyclone on record to ever hit the United States.

The resulting floods flooded hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people and prompted more than 17,000 rescues. Scary times if you live in Houston.
