Hunting Africa
So the hunting season starts in two months time and im very excited to say the least.
One of the few perks of living in South Africa is that a very diverse amount of wild animals for hunting is not in short supply...
I have summed up 4 main animals that i am going to hunt this winter.
- 2 medium sized Buck
- 2 large sized buck
I will be using two of my favourite guns the almighty
.30-06 Springfield for the 2 larger buck,
and the .222-50 Remington for the 2 medium sized buck.
Here are the 4 buck i will be targeting
Gemsbok
oryx gazella
Just a short description...
- They live right on my doorstep here in the Kalahari desert.
- They can weigh up to 240kg (500lb)
- Horn lenght average at 85cm (33inch)
They are very aggressive when they are wounded usually they will attack you if you come to close (when wounded)
Kudu
Greater Kudu
Short description...
- They are abundant all over South Africa
- They can weigh up to 270kg (600lb)
- Horn length can stretch up to 180cm (47inc)
These are truly master of camouflage they easily hide in wide open spaces by blending so well into their surroundings.
Springbok
spring buck
Short description...
- They are also abundant all over South Africa
- Horns can grow up to 50cm (20inc)
- They weigh up to 40kg
They are almost exclusively found in southern Africa and is famous for leaping into the air up to 2 meter.
Blesbok
blesbuck
Short description...
- Abundant all over South Africa
- They weigh up to 80kg(170lb)
- Average horn length is 35cm
This is one i have not hunted before, definitely on my bucket list.
I am so excited, i simply love hunting (and fishing) always make lost of "biltong" (jerky) and droë wors (jerked sausage) its always so much fun, i am a walk and stalk hunter love that extra edge and let the animal have a bit of a fighting chance...
I will most certainly post my hunting trips on steemit with all the photos....
Hope to hear from all my fellow hunters out there.
Regarding the meat all of them are great for eating definitely just the bles buck i am unsure havent tried it yet kudu i usually eat jerked spring buck is all round delicious and gemsbok steak is to die for ....
Cant wait
That would be a dream. How is the meat from these animals?
Another question, is the .222-50 Remington the same as the .222 Remington? I have heard of the latter but not the former.
It seems the .222-50 might be a little light for the blesbok at 170 pounds.
Can't wait to see your hunting stories!
I hope this answers that question bud got this from a hunting forum
They're not even in the same category.
A 222 Rem fires a 55 gr bullet at 3,000 fps.
A 22-250 fires the same bullet at 3,700 fps.
A 222 is considered a 250-300 yds cartridge.
The 22-250 is a 450-500 yds cartridge
I love the.22-250 is more for the longrange shots as to the .222 is more for short range
The velocity of the .22-250 is also much greater for prey on the run
I hope this answers you're question, as to the buck being to big i might reconsider the choice gun but should be able to take it out with a well placed shot...
Thanks for the comment but hope this help's
Okay, thanks for your effort to clarify. My confusion was actually caused by a typo in your post, it seems. Your post refers to a ".222-50" but you actually meant "22-250", it seems, which is a common caliber I am familiar with. I was just wondering if there was a 222-50 but I don't think there is.
Great post anyway, I can't wait to see pictures of you with these rifles (or others if you choose) next to each of these magnificent animals.
Sorry hay we use that as "slang" in afrikaans forgot to correct it
No worries!
