Humility before God: If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8

The apostle John in his first epistle after explaining that God is light and the source of the true life, the eternal life, tell us about the importance of humility before the Lord, if we want to progress spiritually, we must accept that we are all subject to error and that we all sin at some point, although mercy (compassion, kindness) and righteousness (golden rule, Matthew 7:12) are spiritual ideals as in the example of the good samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), the truth is that we cannot be good and kindness with everyone.
That is why the psalmist, most likely King David, asks God for mercy for his sins: "But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me" Psalm 19:12-13.
But when the apostle John speaks to us about sin, this sin is not in the sense of the sin of the pagans; the idolaters, and this is logical, lead a life full of sins, sin in idolaters is a habit, and with this the concealment strategies, walls are erected and bridges are demolished. For the one who sins in this way, the neighbor "does not exist" and is annulled as a person: "If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them", James 4:17.
But when we accept our Lord Jesus through baptism, sin is an exception, this is the sin that John tells us about, that is why the apostle tells us about the forgiveness of God: "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" 1 John 1:8-9.
This is the sin that does not break the relationship with God (venial sins), and that reduces us to a state of temporary imperfection. Being humble and poor in spirit before Jesus means acknowledging that beatitude surrounds us, constitutes us but at the same time it is impossible to reach.
