Give a hug daily
Who would have thought that hugs aren’t just a friendly gesture, but they’re also a kind of therapy that fuels you with positive emotions?
Set this rule for yourself:
Hug at least one person every day. Here are 7 arguments that will prove that hugs have healing powers.
They improve your immune system
People who hug a lot are rarely ill. Even people who feel physically ill will feel a lot better when they feel the support, love and the presence of their loved ones.
They decrease stress
According to some studies, it’s really important to enter physical contact with a loved one when you are in a tensed situation.
Hugging someone you love will help you relax immediately. Also, hugging can calm you before an important event.
They improve your self-esteem
It’s important that a mother hugs her child, in order to assure an adequate emotional development.
The way we will feel about ourselves and how we interact with other people in the future depends on our relationship with our parents as children.
They can diminish depression
Hugging makes serotonin spread in our brain, which is a natural anti-depressant. To hug someone means to develop a healthy attachment and a profound affection.
They stimulate the feeling of fulfilment
While we are hugging someone, a hormone named oxytocin is released and spread.
This hormone stimulates the feelings of fulfilment and calmness. A series of changes takes places in our bodies, which makes us feel calm. It’s amazing that such a complex process starts from a simple touch.
They are essential for survival
Hugs are essential for our physical and emotional survival. Kids who didn’t feel loved grow up to be depressed and isolated, and that makes their life a lot harder.
Hug a single person and you’ll feel better immediately.
They are gestures of gratefulness
Hugs are used to show someone you care about them, but also to move on front a conflict. They can even save a marriage, because they’re a form of love, gratefulness and affection.
This is great. We all need one
I always hug everyone in my family with a real good bear hug. Feels so good. I love it. They love it. Hugging someone you make love with also is a must of course and feels amazing. Maybe I should with all my friends too, but its not easy when most of them are male and its not common for male friends to hug in Norway. xD
The best hugs I had in my life was with a girlfriend I loved. I look forward to when I will have those amazing feelings all over my body again. Same with kisses, kissing someone I love sends an "electric shock" wave of pleasure all over my body. <3
As adults, we can live without hugs, of course, but we do seem to be happier with them. We release the hormone oxytocin when touched, which elevates feelings of attachment, connection, trust, and intimacy. When we're hugged, we feel less lonely. I speculate that students feel less devastated by academic problems when well-hugged, well-assured, and well-bonded. Apparently, hugs facilitate social bonding and the experience of participating fully in this life, which, to me, is true happiness.
A hug, sometimes in association with a kiss, is a form of nonverbal communication. Depending on culture, context and relationship, a hug can indicate familiarity, love, affection, friendship, brotherhood or sympathy.[2] A hug can indicate support, comfort, and consolation, particularly where words are insufficient. A hug usually demonstrates affection and emotional warmth, sometimes arising from joy or happiness when reunited with someone or seeing someone absent after a long time. A non-reciprocal hug may demonstrate a relational problem. A hug can range from a brief one second squeeze, with the arms not fully around the friend to an extended holding. The length of a hug in any situation is socially and culturally determined. In the case of lovers, and occasionally others, the hips may also be pressed together. The emotionality of the hug furthermore influences the direction of the hug. In deeply emotional contexts, hugs tend to be more left-sided compared to hugs in neutral situations such as greetings. While the overall direction of hugs corresponds with physical motor phenotypes such as handedness, the emotional state induces an overall shift to the left attributed to right-hemispheric emotional processing.
There is evidence that adults who were frequently hugged and cuddled during early childhood display fewer stress symptoms than less-hugged counterparts . Physical affection also alleviates stress reactions in adults who report less existential anxiety even when touched only briefly . We are simply wired to find touch reassuring, as many studies of first impressions show.
