Never tried sloe gin, actually... i never tried any gin with sugar, every time i drink gin is gin tonic (edit: just realized tonic water is mainly sugar xD)...
I've reduced my drinking to a few times a year but back when i drunk i mainly went for whisky! I, just like you, like my drinks bitter, and i think whisky does this very well
