How to grow an avocado tree - Steemit sustainability part 2
Part 2 of my steemit sustainability series looks at the simple process of growing your own avocados. Just like pineapples (which I examined last time) avocados are incredibly easy to grow!
Simply take your avocado stone, clean it and then gently push three sicks into the skin to support it above a glass of water. Here we have used incense sticks.
Make sure you position the stone the right way round. There will be a small point at the top end of the stone and the base (the root end) will be slightly flatter.
Top up with clean water every few days making sure the base is always submerged.
After a few weeks, the root will appear...
When the root is an inch long, transplant into a pot. A few weeks later you should see the young plant emerge from the soil.
Make sure you give it lots of love!
...and of course water & sunshine :)
After another few weeks it will look like this.
At which point it is ready to plant in your desired location taking into consideration that it will grow to be somewhere between 20 - 40 ft.
Be patient for the fruit to appear. This will take anywhere between 5 - 13 years.
And then you can begin the process again!
Hope you enjoyed this presentation. I look forward to teaching you more next week...
5-10 year in a good climate!
That is true :)
Interesting.
Thanks ;)
Beautiful post! indeed avocados are easy to grow and your method is interesting. I used to grow my avocado trees by simply planting the seed in a pot.
Well I guess that probably works just as good! Seems logical enough. Not really sure why I've always used this method. I think my mother taught me a long time ago! Thanks for the comment :)
ill give a try ! well Greece climate is lil crazy but at least ill try !! nice one!!
Do some research first to see if anyone else is doing it in your area. I know it wouldn't be possible in the UK where I am from. Shame really, as avocados are up there with the best of them :)
I've already tried it several times, but I had no success yet.
I must admit only about 50% of ours seem to work... so plant loads and expect a few :)
Avocado is the same as pear right?im sort of mixing it up.The ripe once are soft and can be used as butter on bread and pastries.(That's th e pear i meant).Don't know if Avocado can be eaten like that.....
Is avocado really the same as a pear? And yeah, you can only eat them when they are soft.
Nice.....will look for some to eat this weekend.
