How to use Google alerts to monitor what people are saying about you online

If you do business online, or market online, you definitely have an online image to cater for. Especially for internet marketers, how the crowd out there sees you have a direct influence on the products you sell or services you promote. So in addition to representing your products or services well, you need to know whether people generally have a good feeling towards you. It’s important to listen to what people are saying and how they are saying it. You want to know if other sites are linking to you, quoting you, supporting you, or complaining about you. You want to know what your competition is up to and how they are faring.

There are literally billions of web pages on the internet. So it is impossible for you to check all the different websites that people post comments and reviews on.

This is where Google alerts come in. Google alerts gives you a notification through your email whenever your name, product, or services gets a mention on any website. To set up Google alerts is quite easy. Just follow the steps below

HOW TO CREATE A GOOGLE ALERT

Step 1: Visit www.google.com/alerts

Step 2: In the box at the top, enter a topic you want to follow (For example your name, website, business name, email, etc).

Step 3: To change your settings, click Show options. You can change the following: How often you get notifications, the types of sites you’ll see, your language, the part of the world you want info from, how many results you want to see, what accounts get the alert, etc.

Step 4: Click Create Alert. You’ll get emails whenever there are matching search results about the name you entered.

EDIT AN ALERT

Step 1: Visit www.google.com/alerts

Step 2: Next to an alert, click Edit.

Step 3: If you don’t see any options, click Show options. Make your changes.

Step 4: Click Update Alert. To change how you get alerts, click Settings and then check the options you want and click Save.

HOW TO DELETE AN ALERT

Step 1: Visit www.google.com/alerts

Step 2: Next to the alert you want to remove, click Delete.

Optional: You can also delete an alert by clicking Unsubscribe at the bottom of an alert email.
