You're not a true sniper until you master the bolt-action rifle. This is something @markpluto, an enthusiastic Steemit member, found out the hard way. Although Mark has had many years of experience with handguns and semiautomatic rifles, he's never once handled a bolt-action rifle.

Don't Assume -- It Makes an "Ass" out of "U" and "Me!

Well...I showed him the all the basics, but I forgot one piece of information -- eye relief! Having trained in the VEPR 7.62 with a Nikko-Sterling scope, I assumed he had already ingrained the lesson of eye relief, or the ability to see through the scope at a distance.

The other problem? The recoil of the .308 Winchester, which is considerably more than the 7.62x39mm caliber. That extra power makes eye relief all the more important.

Finally, from my vantage point, I couldn't discern the eye relief problem until after Mark complained about a cut in his forehead. Later, in video editing, I saw the reason for the bruisin' -- no eye relief!

Don't Take Life Too Seriously!

We laughed about it, and we laughed some more! Sometimes, life hurts...but it's how we respond to the pain that matters. Mark kept on shooting, and I encourage the same, whether literally or metaphorically.
