You don't need a computer science degree to know how to code and the results of the 2015 developer survey were startling. Nearly half of the 26,086 developers who responded didn’t have a computer science degree.

The benefits of being self-taught are enormous. However I could say that if you are doing it by yourself it’s because you are really interested in learning how to code, and it’s very valuable. In college you will find people who feel really committed on learning but there are also some others who are just concerned about approving their subjects. So long you have the discipline to explore many kinds of subjects you are good to go and Guidance from someone who is more experienced would help to progress the way we think better. The next time we face the same question, we already have the best choice. Or maybe not as well, since the are many new frameworks and libraries are being introduced constantly to solve problem in easier and effective ways.

There are lots of online learning tools out there to help and guide you a good developer. Some are free to use anywhere in the world.

Freecodecamp is great because there is a active community that uses it. They answer questions in real time thru hip chat and are very nice to work with. There you can find many people that regularly pair program over the internet together. Most people are just learning how to program, so its a friendly environment.
