How to be a Bachelor : Counter space is important

in #howto7 years ago

Counter space is the buffer between you and the unknown, the unexpected, and the inconvenient. It is a finite resource that gets eaten up by everything you do.

As a bachelor, you need to work daily to increase your counterspace availability. When you live with someone else, you don't have full control over counter space, and it gets eaten up twice as fast. But you DO have control when you are a bachelor. If you take control.

You need space next to your stove, and you need it to be safe for hot utensils. Things burn if you can't get them off the fire RIGHT NOW. Sure, you are careful, but it happens anyway, unexpectedly.

You need space beside your sink, because something needs to be washed but you can't do it right now. The inconvenience becomes an issue when three things are happening at once. A phone call, a knock at the door, and your dinner plate with leftover fatty bits from your steak.

You need counter space in your life. A little money in the bank, a friend you can count on, a go-bag under the stairs. Even if you never need to use them, a little space can relieve the unconscious stress of the unknown that always waits in the dark corners of life.
