Ichthyosis newborn!!!
This rare condition has been given several names like harlequin ichthyosis, or collodion baby - it describes a continual and widespread scaling of the skin.
A collodion baby is referred to the first expression of ichthyosis, a skin that resembles a yellow, tight and shiny film or dried collodion (sausage skin), which later on cracks and undergoes desquamation or peeling.
This is a severe congenital disease, notice how the skin forms large, diamond-shaped plates that are separated by deep cracks (fissures). These skin abnormalities affect the shape of the eyelids, nose, mouth, and ears, and limit movement of the arms and legs. Restricted movement of the chest can lead to breathing difficulties and respiratory failure.
Infants with harlequin ichthyosis often experience an excessive loss of fluids (dehydration) and develop life-threatening infections in the first few weeks of life.
The hard outer layer eventually peels off, leaving the vulnerable inner layers of the dermis exposed which can lead to complications due to high risk of infection.
