Horse identification
So when i am at the barn one of the most common things i am asked is "what kind if horse is she?"
so for anyone out there interested in horses here are a few of my favorite breeds and the common traits and characteristics to identify them.
Arabian
Arabs are commonly known for their high tail carriage. Their tail grows so long it drags on the ground if they dont carry it high up. They are a smaller breed, originating from the arabian desert, they have a lot of endurance and although they are not fast, would beat any race horse in a long distance run.
Buckskin
This is more of a color then a breed. But very specific. They have a tan body and a black mane and tail. They are often confised with dun horses. Who are the same color but have a black dorsal stripe on their back.
Thoroughbred
These are the racehorses. They come in most colors but brown is the most common. They have long legs and a long neck but a small head. They are one of the fastest breeds but they tire easily. Which is why races are close distances.
Friesian
Friesians have high tail carriage like arabians due to the long tail. But unlike arabs they are really tall. They only come in black, and they have long hair around their hooves like draft (work) horses. Even though they have fuzzy feet and are tall they are still considered a light breed. They are used for english style riding such as dressage as they are not very comfortable to ride on the trails. They are very fancy like luciano horses which i havent put in this post but could add if i make a second breed post.
Palomino
This is my friend kaitlyn riding tubby.
Palominos make good western horses, they are easygoing and size varies. Tubby is quite tall, but i have seen smaller ones. They are very good with other animals and have been used for roping and other western sports. Although i have seen them in english events as well.
Anyways this is the last breed for todays post. There are plenty of others.. Too many to list in one post. I am probably going to make one on draft class horses later this week. But for now, theres my list of my favorite horse breeds, and some of their characteristics.
