Yea, I think a lot of it is their upbringing. I have did a lot of research on serial killers, and common similarities are abusive childhoods, absent fathers, bed wetting into their teens, just to name a few. I'm sure they were inspiration for the horror movies, The Town that Dreaded Sundown was based on a real serial killer, not sure if you've seen that one, but its good.
