Update on the Garden - The Seasons are Changing...
There is no deigning it - Summer is coming to an end here in my zone 2 garden. The days are getting shorter, the under story is starting to change color, the geese are flocking, the squirrels are starting to put up their nuts for the winter and we got our first frost warning for tonight! Yikes!
Folklore has it that you can predict the severity of the winter by the wooly worm's bands. If there is lots of black sections there will be a more severe winter.
This little character is pointing towards a bit of a severe winter for us. We've got a good supply of winter wood in so we feel ready and the root cellar and pantry is starting to fill up.
With cooler weather the nasturtium is finally starting to come into its own.
My Greens Garden
We have self seeders in the garden and this sun berry plant is one of them. I don't know if we'll get anything for it bloomed a little late. The garlic was just some extra cloves that were sprouting in the spring so we popped them in the ground. They are a bit behind but if it stays dry for the fall we should get something.
The red lettuce has been producing well and it picks up the red coloring starting to come in the chokecherry bushes.
My last update I had shown how the moles were in my bean patch. Now they have moved up into my greens garden, in the lettuce and kale by the volunteer Johnny Jump Ups. JJ found their hole and I think he got them for there hasn't been anymore damage.
The sunflowers continue to brighten the garden.
With the frost warning for tonight I went into panic mode and picked any tomatoes that were close to ripening ( It's been pretty cool so they will ripen quicker inside anyways).
I got my beautiful plants that were on the deck indoors so the frost wouldn't take them. Also I pulled in some pepper plant and a couple of zucchini plants I had in container in my micro climate garden. We still have to upgrade the wiring for the grow light I'm going to put up in my sun room so I can continue gardening all winter long. The sun doesn't come over the tree tops in the winter so we have to supplement the light in the sun room to grow some vegetables.
Photos are all taken with my Canon PowerShot A495
You have a minor grammatical mistake in the following sentence:
It should be its own instead of it's own.Got it!
Great update, loved the photos!
I'm zone 7 and I feel it coming and the days shortening.
Go JJ good boy!
It kind of snuck up on us. the summers are so short here. JJ is a good hunter. In zone 7 can you grow year round?
Yes with a greenhouse which is on my list 😉
Ahh! Lucky you! I have set up my four season sunroom for growing year round but I have to supplement it with light for the sun doesn't come over the tree tops in the winter.
I use to live in South Florida now that's year round growing!
When we made the decision to move growing season was discussed as well as snow accumulation etc and this was about as far north as we could go and still accomplish our goals for sustainability. I have a lot if critters to feed.🤠
I have had dreams about a sun room. What do you use? Grow lights?
I had started with a light stand ( using florescent 4' bulbs) for growing my seedling in spring and some low growing greens in the winter. I just bougth a 1000 watt LED grow light for I want to do more intensive indoor growing this winter.
Thats great. I've heard the new led lights are much better and more energy efficient.
Yes, that's why were going that direction.
Meanwhile down under here in Australia, the days are starting to get a little longer and we're seeing a lot more sunshine and signs of Spring moving in!
Oh I wish spring was just coming in as our summers are way to short here! Enjoy your spring and the return of the light!
Congrats you won the daily Gogreenbuddy upvote worth roughly 50 cents! Keep writing like this and you will keep winning!
Great! Thanks so much!
Frost already?!?! Where we live, we usually do not get our first frost until the first week or two of October. We are trying to get as much canned from our garden before that weather sets in. Haha! Great Job!
It was a frost warning and you could feel the chill in the air so I took measures to protect my plants. Our usual expected frost date is the second week in September but you never know in this country - we have had frost in every month of the year. Very short growing season. Short but intense!
