Homesteading Challenge 3, Sharing my Rooster Buddy
@kiaraantonoviche is hosting a new homesteading challenge. She's asking us to share a photo, or photos, of a favourite animal buddy. So here's mine:
Meet Roast, the urban rooster. He came into our lives more or less by accident as a scrawny, clumsy juvenile. For a long time he was terrified of our adult hens, even once he towered above them!
Living in a suburban area meant we couldn't have him crowing in the early hours, so in his early crowing days the twilight hours were sometimes spent in bed with my daughter to keep him quiet so we wouldn't have to get rid of him.
Thankfully he was never one to crow a lot, so we've developed a routine where he comes in at night and no longer crows in the day (after a bit of training).
He is a clumsy, gentle giant with one small wattle, who takes his flock guardianship seriously. He loves a cuddle and fuss, just not in front of his ladies!
He may not be the likeliest candidate, but this big feather ball has wormed his way into our hearts.

You can teach a rooster to NOT crow...?
Wow, who knew...
Sadly, not all roosters respond to it. I'm currently working on any araucana rooster, but although he's improving, he isn't as easy as Roast.
I have no bunghole!
That is so cool! He truly is a wonderful looking bird! I cant wait until our little guy becomes a big loving giant!
Exciting! What breed is he?
What a beautiful rooster! Never knew birds enjoyed cuddling. Also, congrats on winning the challenge!
Thank you. I was surprised how much birds can enjoy being cuddled. Or hens will come in for group hugs if you sit down in their run!
Oh he is gorgeous.Such a gentle giant
Thank you. Isn't it funny how the big ones are often the gentlest? Our little rooster is being a bit of a sod with my daughters recently. Luckily they can handle him.
