Creative Way To Use A Partial Hay Ring

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

When we bought our farm the previous owner left random things here. Most of those items have been useless, but we did find a use for the partial hay ring we found buried in some brush!

We don't own tractor and have 2 Percheron Mares to work the land. We are still trying to rig something up for them to move large round bales for us, but until then we peel off layers of the round bales and bring it out for our livestock. When the round bales are smaller we move them out to the pasture using nothing more than "man power."

Anyway, we were trying to figure out a better way to give the horses and cow their loose hay. We took a piece of the hay ring and set it up in a corner by the gate so we could easily toss hay into it. This made use of something sitting in the "junk pile" and solved a problem we had on our farm. We put two t-posts on the edges of the hay ring piece and attached them to it. Our draft horses are big girls and can be a bit rough so we didn't want to attach it directly to our fence, which is already in rough shape.

Here is @jal627 attaching the hay ring to the t-posts.

I started filling it with hay and our cow, Sweet Daisy Mae, couldn't wait to chow down. I think she's happy with the new addition too!

And here is the war wound @jal627 incurred. There was a storm coming in, so in the rush to get this project done he accidentally whacked himself good with the t-post pounder on a rebound. OUCH!

I knocked my self out cold once with a fence post pounder. I feel his pain. Great idea though for the hay feeder.

Nice post thanks for sharing this idea
