We are trying to become self sufficient and fully off the grid on a budget. This means growing our own vegetables, raising chickens, fishing and hunting for food.

But we recently moved to our new 18 acre homestead and had no idea that the weather here is 10 degrees colder at night than in town just 7 miles away. We get a lot of freezing nights all through summer. The first freeze killed our plants in the spring. The second freeze was during the "heat of summer".

Now we are trying to save what we can from our garden. We have been covering the plants at night to protect them from the frost. We got our first ripe tomatoes today.

We are making mincemeat pie from the tons of green tomatoes that fell off the vine after the frost. We hope to save as much as we can.

I am digging out some of the chili plants in hopes of saving them in pots. We love chili and hope we can still grow some.
