Homesteading ~ Harvesting Chickens ~ Digging Greenhouse
We are trying to become self sufficient and off the grid on a budget on our 18 acre homestead. This includes raising chickens or meat, eggs and fertilizer and growing our own vegetables and herbs.
I am sharing all of our videos since we moved to our new homestead this spring. When I get you caught up with the background story, we will continue to share our daily videos and articles as we make them.
We harvested our larger batch of meat chickens today. These are broiler chickens which are bred to grow fast. They sit around and eat all day and night until they get huge. They are ready to harvest in about 6 to 8 weeks on commercial farms but we semi free range them. Our birds are huge at 12 weeks and are still healthy and strong.
Commercial meat birds get harvested about the time their legs are breaking due to not being able to support their weight. Our chickens, on the other hand, are exercising, foraging and playing so they are strong and healthy at harvest. They are also much larger than commercially raised birds at 8 to 10 pounds each.
Due to a killing summer frost we lost most of our tomatoes. They are falling off the vine so Melanie harvested the green tomatoes to make mincemeat pie and other preserves. We try to use everything on our homestead.
I found a fast and easy way to move the chicken tractor around now. I put new food out in the morning at the new location where I want to place the chicken tractor. Then I release the birds, which run to the food.
Now I can move the empty and very light weight chicken tractor to its new location. And next I simply move the portable fence into its new place, closing off the birds.
This is so fast and easy. The birds so most of the work of moving themselves. This saves me so much time and work. Now I dont need two people or wheels on the chicken tractor to move it.
I dug for a while on the greenhouse project. I am hoping to dig a deep hole in the ground where I will grow vegetables all year. The temperature down below 5 feet is a steady 50 degrees F. So I figure by growing out vegetables at 7 feet deep will help me keep it warmer inside.

People are only interested in what kind of discharge you have. Your the one who bought up your military record on Youtube. If you make your life public expect these kind of questions.

Right now I am not doing anything worthy of recording. People got tired of the sit down and summary talks. So I no longer upload a video when I did no recording.
Been deer hunting, working on the computer (restoring old lost web article) and other boring stuff.
@thediyworld, Why not film Melanie filling all those 5 gallon buckets with water and hauling them to the wood stove to heat them, then hauling them again to to laundry or the dishes or a bath or.....
And film Melanie hauling firewood for the wood stove.
Or film how you are 95 percent off grid and how the extension cord is running from the solar to the refrigerator and other appliances and electronic devices.
See, you have plenty to film about your day.

This video shows what he's dealing with at night. Raccoons are very smart, they can open doors, food containers and generally cause a lot of problems that may appear to be done by humans, but lot's of videos online show raccoons doing amazing things.
