Peas or Rabbit Stew, how will it unfold.

in #homesteading5 years ago (edited)

After preparing the soil by turning it over and picking out the weeds, #farm-mom gets busy planting the very first seeds in the garden. Being that peas can stand up to cold temperatures, it is always the first seed to go into the ground.
Spring has finally arrived. 😎

We plant two different kind of peas, Sugar Snap and Oregon Sugar Pod.
The Sugar Snap's pod is a delicacy. They are great in salads, and stir fry dishes.
Pick them early, when the peas are still very small, and the pod will be tender as ever.

Many of the pods we will let grow, and pluck those wonderful little green gems from the husk.
At this point the peas are prime, and the pods are added to our compost pile.

With the earth ready, willing, and able, it is time to fill the holes.

By taking the handle of a shovel, we were able to make small impressions in the garden, which would conceal the seeds.
No bending over for this maneuver, that always puts a 😁 on my face.
The pea seeds will be planted at a depth of no more than 1 in.
They can be planted as close as 2 in. from one another.

With this 50 foot stretch of garden planted we will cover the seeds with a light sprinkle of dirt, and softly pat down.
This requires some bending. 😢 Well it's good for the core.

Having had a problem with the rabbits eating the vines of the peas, before they ever reached the wire mesh, I came up with a pretty cool way to keep them out.
Totally organic, cheep, and fun to do. Why not think out of the box.

Using resources from the farm, we gathered a bunch of young saplings, growing under the forest canopy.
Being so young, they are as malleable as ever, which make them easy to snip and use.

By early evening, I felt as though I had resolved the bunny problem.
Truth be told, it was either this little picked fence, or I'm afraid the bunny would have made it to the dinner table.
It probably would have tasted great after consuming a diet FIT and GROWN for HUMANS.

How do you like my matching garments, Versachieee would be jealous.
After wearing a tie for about 182 days a year, and straight up work clothing for the other 180 days, I now dress for both comfort and STYLE.

hope you enjoyed! thebigsweed

Good luck with that rabbit! Too bad you can't invite a fox to come live by your garden!
My battles are with squirrels and raccoons. Boy they do a lot of damage!

We have a problem with the IMG_3546.JPG
as they are constantly getting into the bird feeders, raccoons not so much. Raccoons are the worst as we had a major problem when we were back in NJ, they were always knocking the garbage cans over and making a mess. Thanks for the reply @melinda010100

The squirrels can't get to my feeder. It is 10ft from anything they could jump from and the baffel keeps them from climbing the pole. The raccoon climbs over the baffel like it wasn't even there.

That outfit looks like a Canadian tuxedo!

I bet rabbit stew with peas in it would be wet tasty!

We grow those same ones and I planted them in the box last weekend so that they could start growing and the rabbits can’t get into the box. 50 feet?!? Hat is a long row of beans!

I know I have good taste when it comes to fashion, but it sounds like you guys are one step ahead of me in that department.
Lots of peas, and many of them go from the vine to the mouth before ever making it to the kitchen. they are so sweet it is like eating a piece of candy @zekepickleman

Thats a creative way to deter the rabbits lets hope it works and good luck with the peas growing ;)

Lets hope it works for both of us, @tattoodjay, if not it will be time to break out the snares and cook up some rabbit stew for #foodfightfriday.

Well Although I used to like rabbit stew, I haven’t had it since I was a teenager so a long long tie o, i hope your do not need to resort to that :)
