New Roo in the House! Welcome our Wyandotte......
First of all sorry to my Australian followers, a Roo here in the southern U.S. is a Rooster not a Kangaroo….If you have been reading my posts you know our layers have been shall we say bitchy, lots of fighting and reshuffling of the pecking order. We have had some injuries, nothing too bad, but enough that it was affecting egg production which intern means unhappy customers when we can’t fill egg orders. Unhappy customers go someplace else, I am sure you get the picture. As you may or may not know you don’t need a rooster to have egg layers, but we are finding out his week it sure helps! We had some friends that had an extra Roo, so we said heck will take him! I was not sure what we would be getting, I only knew we needed to do something. But, were we surprised when he showed what a beautiful bird!
Or I should probably say handsome….
The Wyandotte is one good looking bird!
They brought us a breed we have never had before and didn’t know much about. From what I can find the origins of the breed are from the late 1800’s and mainly a mix of four separatebreeds, they spent some time in the UK in the early 1900’s but for the most part they are a U.S. breed. He is a little larger than our Rhode Island Red hens coming in around 7lbs. The colors go from white to black, mixed with silver, blue, green and a magical gold color that shimmers!
t was fun to watch him parade around when we first introduced him to the flock, he quickly took charge and everything settled down. In the mornings, he will let the hens eat before he eats, quite the gentleman! He keeps the hens from fighting, all seems right now in the flock world order!
Happy Homesteading to ya all, will see ya soon!
Let us know what type of Rooster you guys have and how you like or dislike them….
Thanks,
Bob & Colleen
