Breakfast From the Yard
Good morning!
Every morning I get up and make my husband breakfast and sip coffee and visit before he has to leave.
Then I'm out the door to check on my critters, get them all fed and take a peek at my little garden. Depending on the weather or my schedule planned for the day most of the time I'll do a quick project before going in for my breakfast. I'm more of a brunch person. Lol
So after I raked grass clippings to freshen my chicken run this morning
Well, the parts I can get to anyway, crazy gourd 😊
Gave the Guinea babies a dust bath.... Video in the works!
I ran around the yard and rounded me up some breakfast. Grabbed a fresh egg, a nice squash and a handful of cherry tomatoes. Breakfast from the yard!
My rain catchment on the chicken coop is empty and it looks like I might really get rain today so I better go make sure it's clean!
Thank y'all so much for stopping by the homestead!
@SugarCreek
Almost forgot, original photos taken by me with my cheap cell phone!
Nice update! You really have a system going down there on the homestead! We just get tickled when we can get most of our breakfast foraging on the farm, feels so good!
Say hello to the rains from us!
I don't know about a system, so much to do. I'm just trying to save money to get to my land and keep my critters healthy at the same time! But thank you for the compliment!
Crazy chaos is a system! Remember that letting nature take it's course counts as work ;p
Work avoided counts as work done ;p
Sounds like my kind of work. Haha
Thanks!
Oh man, I'm so jealous! That looks so good!
It was! Lol
I sauteed the squash in sweet cream butter sprinkled with oregano then I fried the egg in that same pan so the egg gets oregano bits. I'm not braggin but these cherry tomatoes are as sweet as candy!
It was a blessed mornin, I'd share with you if I could 😋
Have you ever had a problem with impacted crops from feeding so much grass at once? I'd been warned about doing that by someone it had happened to.
I put a small amount out, with other things, like garden waste or leaves, so it's not the only thing they have to pick at...
Looks like a real nice breakfast!
The clippings were from a couple days ago so they are more like hay now but I forage for them every day all kinds of greens, weeds and seeds.
I do make sure they have plenty grit. I've never had a problem but I'll research that. I've had chickens most of my life and I'm embarrassed to say I never heard of that!
I do know that once it becomes more hay like, it's much harder for the crop to process, than in the green form.
But it sounds like you offer lots of other stuff, so that's probably why there's never been a problem.
I've also had chickens most of my life and I'd not heard about it until 5 years ago...
I did some quick research and the things they recommend for nursing them through it are things I do regularly anyway so I'm guessing that's the main reason I haven't had an issue.
I feed them several times a day healthy options. I found it interesting the info I read as well as your comment about them eating the grass. My chickens rake through it looking for bugs when the bugs run out they look at me to get more. I have never seen them eat the grass.... Weeds, herbs, flowers, seeds they devour but leave the grass and straw as bedding. Very interesting! I love and value my hens and I love learning new things so I very much appreciated the info.
Now that I have this knowledge I will observe them even closer.
Thank you so much
Awesome! I can't wait for my garden to start producing. We should start getting things in about a week or so.
Thanks, it is wonderful to be able to feed yourself very empowering. I'll be watching for your garden post!
Nothing better than making food from stuff you grew yourself. 🙃 I love it!
Very empowering indeed !
We got a rain shower last night!
Actually a lot of thunder to but a little rain. My garden will be happy 😀
Ooohh, I’m a little jealous, haha. We haven’t seen rain since.... The end of May/first week of June. 🙂 (but not too jealous... we still have to get our hay in the barn, lol.)
Happy gardens are the best!
howdy there @sugarcreek! hey I really like your morning routine, very efficient! The breakfast looks scrumptious as well!
Yeah I gotta move around before I eat breakfast and I can eat relaxed once everybody else is taken care of.
One of my greatest pleasures is a meal I've grown!
and the healthiest too! praise God!
