Butchering a Cow Tomorrow, so We Started Preparing TODAY!
Tomorrow our friends, beatitudes8, are bringing T-bone down for freezer camp followed by making smoked sausage. Nick will cover most of it on his blog but I wanted to share a few things we are doing today to make sure tomorrow is a success.
Checklist of COMPLETED items:
- Wood it ready for the fire, great way to get rid of parts that would attract predators.
- Knives are sharpened (ready to shave with)
- Stainless tables are set up and cleaned with bleach water mix. In the morning I will rinse with fresh water.
- Block and tackle in position to hoist the cow.
- Grinder is ready
- Coolers are clean
- Blocks of ice are ready
- Buckets and boxes ready for organs and fat that will go to dog food
- Wheel barrel and ready to transport waste material...the guts weigh a lot and you need to have a way to move them easy. Provided you get the animal hoisted properly this works well.
- Batteries charge and saw ready
- Friends are called to ready to help!
It was a great day, Thanks Luke and Samantha for all the help!
On Thursday we will be making 300 pounds of sausage...we will share this also.
What projects do you complete/share with your friends or neighbors?
That's a great set up. Having the right tools makes any job less burdensome!
You say you're sharing the sausage? You're a great guy!! haha
That is quite a list. But better to be prepared. A group of family&/friends always makes for light work and lots of fun. Not to mention the great meat you get to take home and enjoy much later.
NOW THAT is an impressive to-do list!
Not many homesteaders or like -minded people near me. Plus I am such an introvert.
God luck today with the chore with @beatitudes8!
I did this about 10 months ago with some friends. We ground up a whole half, it is a very satisifying feeling eating that months later.
Hope you have some laughs along the way.
Love Steemit...because at least here you can talk and share about this subject without getting flack from the platform. Looking forward to following this process both here and over at @beatitudes8
Looking forward to your upcoming posts as I have never butchered a cow. The largest animal I worked with is sheep.
WOW! What a wonderful time and a great learning experience! Thank you @shalomacres for having us and sharing not only your home and equipment but your knowledge and experience. We had a blessed time with good friends and even got some work done.
Making sausage, one of the things on my list of things to learn!!
I believe @beatitudes8 will be posting this within a day or 2. We will share some information soon on the smoke house and how we let the meat cure.
Awesome! I will keep my eye out for it... :) Thank you...
