Our Straw bale bath house will be done this summer!

in #homesteading5 years ago (edited)

This bath house will be completely off-grid, using solar power, water catchment, it will have a composting toilet, and the water from the shower (all soaps and detergents are biodegradable) will water our trees and garden.
Here are some pictures of the construction of the bath house.

We thought about a rubble trench foundation with adobe floors, but decided against it for time restraints, so we we just poured a slab.

We did a post structure with straw bale infill.

We decided on a shed roof for max solar gain in the winter and max cooling in the summer.

This is Cindy finding the best bales of the lot. You need really tight bales, and some are just not up to par.

Here you can see the bales getting stacked.

The bales are stacked to about 8 feet for this structure, the rest will be insulated with normal fiberglass insulation.

The south facing wall is going to be a door and a large window for solar gain.

I really wanted to do a longer post, but we have been so busy. I will do a more in depth post when we are nearer to finishing.

We are currently putting siding up, covering the bales with a clay slip and plaster, and adding solar.
