Tropical Plants Grown in Arkansas.steemCreated with Sketch.

Tropical plants in Arkansas? Yes its possible. On our homestead we grow papayas, bananas, ginger root, and turmeric root. But today I'm going to show you the papayas. These amazing plants have grown 6-10ft tall in one year from seed.DSC00943.JPG They have fruit on them that weigh about 1lb. Lots of them. We are not sure if we will get any papayas this year based on how late in the year it is.DSC00945.JPGThey also have many more buds and small fruit. It seems like once the papaya starts producing it never stops because looking up the tree the higher it gets the more fruit is on it.DSC00947.JPGAnother thing that impressed me about these trees is the base. It is probably 5-7in in diameter at the base. DSC00942.JPG These trees grow super fast.( Don't know about the fruit yet but will keep you updated) I wont recommend them until I get some fruit but I am very impressed for a first year tree. If you are wondering about winters we do see five degrees some winters so we were planning on putting tomato cages filled with leaves and wrapped in bubble wrap to keep them warm.

You can eat them right now! Green papayas make a great salad, you can cook with them, make pickles and relishes. So, even if they never get fully ripe, you already have tons of great food! They don't like to have cold wet feet - just something to consider when you implement your winter protection plan....

Great information, thank you for sharing! We will try some later today.

Let me know how you like it. :)

Amazing what will grow if you try it out!

What line of latitude are you on?

I may try growing some in Oklahoma, if I'm close to the same latitude.

Thank you. I looked up our latitude and 35.567... is what I came up with. Have a good day.

About 60 miles more southern than me, but it'll still be worth a try!

That's not to bad. If you cover them up in the winter they should be fine. This is my first year growing them so its just a big experiment.

Wow! I would really love to grow some papaya on my land! No way did I ever think that was possible. We don't live too far from you!

That would be cool. It is really neat to watch these trees grow.

I can't believe you have had that much success with so many plants that most people won't even try to grow! WONDERFUL!

Interesting, let us know how they handle the winter

will do another post next spring on how they did during the winter
