I Love Super Busy Days!
There’s so much going on here today. A package in the mail, a tree coming down, progress in the lab (that’s my fancy name for my growroom), and a seed mix up.
Which is Which?
Every year when I’m storing harvested seed, I forget to label a bag or two. It’s not a big deal. Well, it hasn’t been til this year. I harvested and dried seed for some habaneros and some ghost peppers. The only difference in the appearance of these peppers is the size. But when the tops dry and shrivel, they’re about the same size.
The only reason it matters is because I’d like to plant 3 or 4 habaneros, and only one ghost pepper. Oh well, it’s really not the end of the world. I’ve just got to label better this year!
Lab Progress
I got a second light hung and some seed started today. Fever few, chives, basil, and lemon grass. I’ll be doing a post on fever few tomorrow, so watch for that.
The next time you see this room it will be finished. Drywall, paint, the works. :) I might even get fancy and hang some curtains.
Bring Down the Tree
So, Adam did some wheeelin’ and dealin’ and got a great deal on the felling of our backyard elm. We need to bring this tree down for several reasons. It used to split off into a ‘Y’ about five feet from the ground. An ice storm took one branch of the ‘Y’ off about 9 years ago. Since then, the tree has been leaning more and more towrds my house. That’s the big reason. The rest of the reasons are really just benefits. I don’t know if you have an elm tree, if you do then you know hundreds of thousands of seeds rain down out of an elm and at least 25% of them germinate, creating hours worth of weeding out little tiny trees from the garden and flower beds. The seeds clog the gutters and then sprout and grow. We’ve got to remove several hostas this year so we can dig out a couple trees that we missed, hidden in the tall hostas, and didn’t notice them until they were so well rooted that they can’t just be pulled out of the ground. We’re planning on building a shed in backyard, and the area that the tree is in is the best place for the shed. Last, but not least, taking down the tree will give me more sun time on my garden. So the tree’s got to go.
The job started today, and the tree should just be a big pile by tomorrow afternoon.
It’s a good thing that little fence is coming out in a week or two.
Mail Time!!
A couple of weeks ago, I won the $20 worth of SBD that @brandonfrye gives away in a daily drawing. The day I won, he happened to be doing a bit on @steembay and had designed some shirts and hoodies to auction off there, and in addition to the $20 worth of SBD, the winner, me, recieved a Steemit T!
I’m thinking of mailing it out to all my favorite Steemians and having them sign in and send it back to me, so when we’re all rich and famous I can say, “I knew them when.” :) ;) :D

But think of the cool post youll be able to do when its completed! I was thinking of starting up an artisan trade with other steemers, see what kind of art work i can collect from the world. shipping is an issue though....let me know if you come up with any creative ideas!

i am also the kind of person who looks at any sort of fabric with a pattern, and if i love it, i think of how great it would look either as curtains or as wallpaper.
oooohhhhh - lemongraaaaaaaaaasssssssss! are you putting one seed in each of the starter container thingies, or are you doing multiples? my end-result plants are never super full and lush like they are in seed catalogs & i'm wondering if i'm just doing that first part wrong.

I put several seeds in each container. The real reason I did, is because my seed is a couple years old and I think the germination percentage might be real low. Mine are always pretty thin the first year, but I keep them in containers and bring them in for the winter. Second year plants are a little more full. This past fall, I didn’t have room for them in the house, so I dried some, gave a couple away and the rest froze... I’ll make room this year. I have a hard time starting them from seed, for what ever reason.

bringing them in to let them survive for a second year is something i haven't had the chance to do - the cat loves to chew on anything green! maybe they'll fit into the shop building here at the new place. thanks for the feedback!

@powellx5, I am always intrigued when I see you posts about seeds and gardening. Once life settles down a bit I want to see if I have a green thumb or not.

I’m very appreciative of the grow lights. Once we get a green house up, I might not need them so much. I definately won’t have to use them for so long. Spending money on electricity to save money on food seems unproductive. But the benefits out weigh the electric cost!
Yes, we also owned grow lamps before we built our tiny home. And although they sucked so much energy, the emotional return of knowing you started it all is worth it!
There really is an emotional return. A lot of that comes from knowing that I can, in my small backyard, produce a significant amount of food for my family that I know has no pesticides or chemical fertilizers. There's a peace of mind and knowing where my food comes from.

lol, I am glad I am not the only one that does not always label things. I have a mess of seeds right now that all look the same but I forgot to add labels - so I think I'll have a few beds that are just "pepper mix" and "tomato mix" ...people will ask me what kind of tomato that is and I won't know but it's FOOD and that's what matter most right?
What growing zone are you? I am so envious of everyone that is starting their seeds already. I wanna see pictures of your steemit schwag!!
I’m right on the cusp of 6b and 7a. I’ve had mixed tomato rows a time or two.
@minismallholding is in Australia. I had a conversation with her just a couple days ago about all the pictures of beautiful veggies and foliage growing all over the place while I’ve got a foot of snow on the ground, and how distressing that was for me. lol Then I was informed that they grow year round. Envy isn’t the word for it. I think I’m going to have to move. To Australia. ;)
At least you have your seeds narrowed down to two possibilities. A couple of times labels have been missing from a couple of different varieties of the same seeds. Like you said, after they grow and produce, you can usually tell what they are.
Yeah, in the past I’ve been beyond thankful that not all seeds look the same! If I can tell that all my unlabeled are tomatoes, I guess it’s not that big of a deal. Imagine if they all looked the same. I’d inevitably have a cucumber vine growing through my eggplant patch!
