Some days just suck....
Yesterday we had some friends over for dinner. It was a good day, until my middle daughter came running into the house saying that our dog, Crockett, had gotten into the sheep's pen and attacked our whether.
When I got to the scene of the crime it was too late. My dog had already attacked our lamb and killed it...heck he had already eaten enough of the lamb to feed a decent size family. It was a viscous kill. Below is a video and a picture or two to show our loss.
When we lose an animal, we have to decide what to do with the carcass. Here, on this rocky hill, we compost. It gets too difficult to dig a hole deep enough to keep predators away. Plus, with composting it, we can turn that lamb into strawberries or cucumber.
As you can see below, it is time for the dog to go. I had two great dogs before this disaster, but coyotes killed one and the other (a Great White Pyrenees.) was ran down and later the person bragged on Facebook that he had run down a white wolf. Yeah, a white wolf with a collar and looks like a Pyrenees and not a wolf.
Anyway, after this lamb incident, it's time this dog find a home. I have had the suggestion that a certain vaccine would help him settle down. Not sure if any of you have heard of a lead shot, but it seems to really calm the animal down.

It is always heart breaking when we lose our animals, such as your sheep and your dog. So sorry to hear.
Thank you. It is tuff. The following day, a friends dog came over and tried to kill one of my ewes. Fortunately, I was able to see it in the process, and hopefully save the ewe. We will see. She had a big hole in the top of her neck, but no major breaks or bleeding, just a hole the size of a half-dollar. She should heal up nicely.
This is so sad! I thought we had it bad when our dog eat 12 of our chickens in one setting. I know that you know what you are doing and we hope that all of this some how works out for you. But to tell you the truth I would have never thought about using it as a compost. That is a great idea!
We have lost hundreds of chickens. We will get thru this. A good friend of mine told me about the composting of large animals. Very sanitary, no stink, and you can reuse the animals remains as dirt. I was preparing to do it on a large scale to compost chicken remains from chickens I was preparing to butcher and sale. We had 300 at the time of planning but we lost them in a fire.
So sorry! Nothing more frustrating than losing a good animal.
Sorry for your loss. Another reason we don't have a dog. That dog would have dirt nap coming. It's just part of homesteading and it breaks your heart.
If I was ever to have a dog, I have heard good things about Pyrenees and livestock and how well they protect them. Wishing you guys the best. We all have bad days.
We had a Pyrenees. He was awesome. We do have some predators around here that won't back down from much. We have large bears, huge mountain lions and the biggest wolves I have ever seen. The Pyrenees kept them all at bay, and would kill a coyote with one bite. He was awesome. He loved the livestock and my children. Some idiot was on Facebook last year bragging that they ran down a white wolf in front of my house. I had to tell them it was my dog. This dog will be worm castings soon. Sick of him. Today a friend of mine came by and we were headed to a café to do some work, and he dropped of his kids to play with mine. He also left his dog here. A good dog that stayed with us for several weeks and worked well with the sheep. Today, he almost killed another. I have a lamb with a hole in the neck on the top and bottom. Looks like it will make it.

Yes, it was for Sukkot. We have a friend that I think we can buy a whether from for Sukkot. Shalom.
Yeah, that wouldn't be such a fun day - to effectively lose the dog and the lamb. I've heard similar reports about the lead vaccine...and hopefully the lamb will end up composting some very good strawberries and cucumbers down the road.

So sorry for your loss of both the sheep and the dogs. Unfortunately some animals are instinctive when it comes to prey. It doesn't make it any easier to deal with the loss. Best of luck. 🐓🐓
