What are friends for? High Tunnel Raising (& Music Playing)
(Today’s Vlog begins and ends with music!)
Today something was put together! As you know we've been working on our High Tunnel, which we got a grant for through the NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service).
First 2 bows up! So nice to have friends here to help.
You've seen us vision about it, clear the area, dig post holes, set posts, put bows together and now today was the day we had friends over to put the bows up. It feels pretty monumental! It looks beautiful on the landscape.
Next up is end walls and base boards and then the plastic!!!
We have 10 days left to work on the High Tunnel and I think we'll make it!
But first, let me tell you about today...
All of the posts were set...we had put the bows together and called some friends in.
As they say... many hands make light work!
We made a fire and got some coals going for we were also going to smoke some rainbow trout I caught the other day and some goat meat that we had raised on the land and stored in the freezer. Our friends arrived shortly thereafter and we got to work.
Aligning the truck/ladder up with the posts so Ini could hold it there.
Our friends who had done this before suggested using the back of our truck to hold the bow in place while the rest of us directed it onto the male end of the poles.
After trying this on this first one, we realized we may need to use some persuasion so we got a hammer out and persuaded it in.
One friend also had the idea to use grease to help the metal go on better. Ini found some rancid sesame oil we'd gotten from my mom's pantry before we moved-- yes he is truly a squirrel and thanks @birdsinparadise!!! :)
The second post went a lot faster! The purlins tied it together and the grease allowed it to slide right on!
Ini climbed on top of the ladder on top of the back of the truck after we had all carried it over to posts. We lifted it high enough and directed it onto the posts.
Honestly the rest just slid on!! We were amazed at how EASY it was! Of course, we're always prepared for the things that may go wrong, but this was a very ease-full part mostly based on having so many hands! We're thankful our friends came over to help us.
So excited to have these up!
Later in the day, after a swim in the creek, we ate the goat and trout and are currently playing music! Gratitude and onward!

like an old fashioned barn raising :) looks like great fun. and amazing how sometimes "greasing the skids" - literally haha - beats brute force persuasion.
hahah yeah! we tried the hammer and settled on a combo of both :)

A good old-fashioned barn raising, well almost!! Heart-smiles to see community coming together.... and ALWAYS lovely to see manifestation!! Looking fwd to learn more about what the tunnel is FOR.... must have missed that somewhere. :) The chilled community music time? oh yes.... :)
haha yes! it was a great day and we're thankful for our friends so much! can't do it without them! it will be for growing perennials likely and some cash crops... stay tuned ;)
