Revisiting the Grapevine

Seventeen days ago I posted about trimming the grapevines. It's amazing how much has changed in that roughly two and a half weeks. Everything has turned a lot greener around here, including the grapevine. As you can see in the picture above, the grapevine has gotten over the shock of being trimmed back and is doing nicely now. Two and a half weeks ago the grapevine looked like the picture below.

In the previous post I mentioned grapes tended to over produce. On this runner there is three clusters of grapes starting to grow. This runner, along with others, will be trimmed back so that there is only 2 clusters on each runner.
20180516_171743[1].jpgThe previous post also mentioned grapes only growing on new growth. Here you can see the difference between the old and new growth. Old growth has a brown color but new growth has a bright green color. Looking closely you can see the grapes only starting on the green limbs (new growth).

Two and an half weeks since a trimming and the grapevine is ready for another one. Luckily, there's a cookout planned and the stems from the trimming will work great in the smoker to season the pork butt.

Very nice post, as always, Mike. Nobody combines photos and text with quite the effect that you do! Grapevines were all "greek" to me, and now I actually know a little.

I take that as a great compliment, thank you. I have learned a great deal having these two vines. Was sort of forced too and I am glad you learned something without being forced to.

LOL...and without having to do any work!

Say, Mike where in IN are you?..sorry if I already asked...

Greenwood, just south of Indianapolis.

Ah.. My niece lives in Indianapolis. I went to college at Grace College in Winona Lake for three years, but finished up back at UMaine.

Small world isn't it.

Tiny..lol..and getting smaller every day.

That was two and a half weeks?
Wow.
big change.

Yes, two and a half weeks. If the weather provides enough rain it will do that all summer long.

I never grew grapes but it looks like fun. Do you get enough grapes to make wine?

From two vines I do not get enough grapes to make wine, since when I make wine it's 5 gallons at the time. I have made some really great jelly though. These are white grapes so it's strange to smell the grape aroma from something that looks like apple jelly.

Hope you keep us updated all the way through jelly season.

Enjoy the pork butt. (That sounds odd)

Will do. The last few years I have had fungus issues and didn't get grapes for jelly. We'll see this year.
