Harvesting Tomatillos & Preparing For Hallowe'en

These little beauties are perfect for salsa!

I've only grown tomatillos for 2 years now, and I gotta say, they are super easy to grow, maybe it's our climate, I don't know, but each of my plants has absolutely thrived, whether in the greenhouse, or outside.

We are still getting tomatoes out of the greenhouse as well, there are a bunch of green ones in there that I'm hoping will ripen. The weather here is staying pretty nice so I'm holding out hope. If I see frost or freezing temps in the forecast I will bring in the green tomatoes and keep them in paper bags to ripen.

Collecting Leaves

I'm going to try and compost as many leaves as possible this year. We don't have much food compost because the chickens eat it all, so I'm looking into other options. The kids have fun gathering leaves, making it a Win ~ Win!

Admiring A Dragonfly...He Sure Was Interested In Us!

IMG_0811.JPG

I've always loved dragonflies, they are a symbol of metamorphosis...I haven't seen very many this summer, and am grateful for the medicine he brought us.

Carving Pumpkins

Okay, rant time...I bloody hate Hallowe'en. Actually I really am unimpressed with all holidays. They are such a sham! Buy this, Buy that. Don't forget a card for your Mother! Oooh look it's bloody time to have another shopping spree! If I didn't have kids I would cancel every holiday. I can't be a grinch though with these little guys, but we do keep things pretty minimal. Holidays are so stupid hahaha!! Basically society all goes along with it, and if you know me, you know how much I loathe following the crowd. Holidays are for no reason but to line the pockets of corporate CEO's even more. C'mon little sheep, jump through our hoop. I'm an awful person, I know. I digress...here's our corporate pumpkins...because society says we should do this.

Thanks for witnessing my journey lovely Steem family! I'll see you around tonight, I have a busy day here, making buns, pulled pork and salsa, also gonna squeeze in a walk with the boys, ta ta for now!

Sort:

I've not come across tomatillos before.

They look rather like cape gooserberries I grow here.

Although they are fruit.

Totally with you on the holidays.

They are just business opportunities rather than meaningful celebrations.

As our children have grown up those holidays get much less attention than when they were young.

In terms of presents I really like to give them at anytime.

If I see some little item that I think one of my friends or family would really enjoy then I get it for them - regardless of Christmas or Easter or whateverday.

I think a present given on the spur of the moment has a lot more meaning than the mechanical exchange process of Christmas for example.

Ahh @pennsif you are so awesome!! I bet people are so genuinely happy and surprised when you get them something spontaneously :) :) :)

I've seen those gooseberries here, I think we call em ground cherries, is that the same thing do you think?

It is the same thing - here we call them pineapple cherries :)

I'm right there with ya' about the holidays. Even so, the kids did a great job at carving their pumpkins!

I grew some purple coban tomatillo's this year from Baker Creek and just love them. They didn't get as big as my green ones but wow, did they make fruit!

Oooooh I've never seen the purple coban yet, I'm gonna look em up and get some seeds, they sound beautiful!!

I absolutely love them. They are a mix of colors, green and purple. Gorgeous to look at and I love the flavor. It is a bit different. More sweet is how I would say it. The fruit is much smaller. So plant more plants. But I think you'll love em'. (Have you figured out, I love these things, haha.)

Great post for October in Canada @lyndsaybowes! Great to see your still post great content to the chain! I like the #teamcanada tag!

I am freeing up some more time for steemit and look forward to seeing more of your posts!

Aw, long time no see @da-dawn, sending tonnes of hugs your way!! :) It'll be good to read more from you, glad you're coming back full force soon!

Yes, leaves can be very valuable. I used to rake them up and put them on the side of the street and the county would pick them up. What did the county do with them? Well, they turned them into compost and sold them back to the people. Wow. With the droughts of California it would make sense to hold moister in. I heard of people putting wood chips on the ground under their fruit trees. Well I thought maybe I can use leaves to hold moister. It seems to work well for it. Yes use all the leaves you can get your hands on.

Good for you for utilizing your leaves, and boooooo for the state to sell people compost with the free material they get.

I'm with ya on the Halloween thing babe, it's just commercialised BS to get you spending.Although I will say your pumpkin carving is epic babe, they are so awesome.
I'm a sucker for Chistmas though, the chance to give people I love prezzies and being with all your friends and family all together once a year is priceless. 😉

Being with friends and family is very wonderful, I just wish we'd do more kindness and giving all year around and not just when we're told to.

I agree. I love giving Mrs Percy as well as friends and family presents for no reason. She loves it but some find it weird. You're right too babe, why can't all year round be the season of good will?

Yep, all just so the cunts can have a huge last quarter. School shopping, then the thanksgiving crap, that black friday or whatever it's called in the US, then xmas, then boxing day, then new year's eve. Just lining their pockets! They laugh at us!!

Muahahaha! Sons of Bitches!!!!!!

Hey you @lyndsaybowes absolutely love the pumpkin's, especially the vomit coming out of the mouth, we did that last year. We carved our pumpkin;s last night too. Thanks for sharing

Always a pleasure reading your posts. SNOW next week my friend, from Ontario. Trick or treating is going to be a nasty chilly one.

Oh man that's terrible! Poor kids will have jackets on under their costumes eh?

Yup, that is normal. My daughter is going as a cow this year. She found a cute Onesie so not too bad to put a coat under. #homesteading

I grew up in northern B.C. yes...the struggle is real, sometimes I could barely get on my costume over my heavy winter coat and boots hahaa!!

We don't get into halloween much here either. We did carve a pumpkin today for the first time ever!

Right on, what kind of design did you do?

Just your generic smiling face. I posted a few images earlier. I've kept some seeds for next year 😉

Cool cool, I'll go see :)

Those are some good looking pumpkins. We will be carving our pumpkins tonight. Time to get messy 😜.
I am totally there with you on all the holiday business, because that is all it is, business. Buy this buy that, but I try to keep in the back of my mind, it’s for the kids and for the memories.

That's cool, I hope you have a fun time tonight getting elbow deep in pumpkin guts :)

Oh ya, those little cuts on my hands from work will definately make me feel the burn. Lol Gloves, no way that just wouldn’t be right 😉

Yep, gloves are for sissies, it is known lol :)

Dah ha ha

To say nothing of the stress that the holidays cause for so many. However, I think preserving and celebrating certain traditions are important, but I think you have the right idea by not over-doing it. So much of it is indeed a money grab.

Wow, not to change the subject, but the massive wind and rain they've been promising is just getting underway here in Central NJ.

Hey, thanks for reading and for resonating @cognoscere! I'm sorry to hear about the weather there, I bet we're going to feel some of that up here, thanks for the heads up, I'm gonna check the weather station now.

Oooooh yeah time to batten down the hatches!!

Wow....we are kindred spirits. I agree with you 1000% about the holidays...cancel them all.

Perhaps they had some significance at some point...but now, in the age of consumerism, it is just an excuse to sell us crap. Hell, Wal Mart starts their Xmas stuff right after Labor Day in Sept. It is sickening.

As for your progress, it is wonderful to see your garden developing and what you are pulling out of it. Your talents grow exponentially as well as your skills on here. I love reading your posts.

Thanks for sharing them all.

:) Thanks very much for contributing to my posts @taskmaster4450 :) I appreciate it!

Of course. You deserve. The fearless leader of Walkwithme deserves all the support in the world.

It is my pleasure to add all I can.

Thank you for the contributions also.
