Garden Update!

garden_update.jpg

I am so grateful for the rain, I have not had to water my garden for two months! I spent hours everyday in the summer making sure everything was hydrated, now I mostly weed and plan my next planting and harvest. I can't grow as much with the days so short, the sun only visits our little spot in the woods for about an hour before in dips back down beneath the canopy. Even so I am still able to eat a little everyday from the garden, something that grounds me and brings me great joy. To work with the earth in collaboration to feed and continue my existence on her soil. Which brings me to my current garden champion, the Broccoli!

This broccoli lives up to its name! It has been pumping out broccoli like there is no tomorrow, making up for the fact that a large portion of the garden is in it's winter slumber. I love to eat broccoli so I am so very grateful to have a high yielding plant in this dark season. I have six more coming up right behind it so it is the hero that will provide food through the entire winter.

Another thing I love about this plant is how strong and sturdy it is. The cauliflower and the Brussel sprouts fall over every time there is a hard rain or wind. Not the broccoli, not matter what it stands firm and tall. Broccoli could be our totem of endurance these winter months.

Before I grew broccoli I though it would only produce one head per plant. It doesn't work that way. You can clip the little individual florets and all the ones around it will keep growing. Little tiny broccoli heads are forming at the base and come up to replace what you harvest in weeks.

I made a broccoli soup from he garden last night. I love soups, coffee and tea. So when it is cold out I enjoy cooking soups, they make the house smell wonderful and get cozy and warm.

1.)To make the soup you sauté onions with some salt and cayenne pepper. Add potatoes (another good winter garden produce.) Then add broth, cook until tender.

2.)Then take the broccoli and split it in half, put half in the soup and roast half in the oven with a little avocado oil and salt.

3.)When the broccoli is tender, add lemon zest and juice from one half a lemon. And then roasted broccoli. Cook for 5 min.

4.)You can eat it chunky or do what I did and just put it in a blender or food processer and pulse until everything is fine making a wonderful texture.

Eating Garden Good!!!!

Something else to report is the potatoes in the wild bed of chaos are attracting all the bugs. They are the only leaves heavily eaten, it doesn't seem to be affecting the plant overall. With them distracting the bugs, my other plants are left to thrive. I planted the dill inside the bed to keep the bugs away, but this works better. If you intentional plant your beds to create balance then observe, its amazing how much our plants can teach you.

My peppers are still hanging in there, with it getting colder I need to get them inside a greenhouse or cover them at night.

You seem like a very happy gardener! Good work :) love your variegated sage, very glam! Followed. Kate

PS: To celebrate your brocolli, check out this Mackie B video :

This is amazing! Hahaha, thank you for sharing this!

Yes, Macka B is awesome :)

Strawberries in December!? I didn’t know that was possible, how cool!

Channeling those broccoli vibes this month- sturdy and strong in harsh conditions! Lol

I am pretty excited to, I abused them by waiting way to long to plant them so they were stunted and all sickly. Then in an effort to establish themselves they are fruiting like crazy. Strawberries always seem to perform better after trauma.

Oh maybe I'm a strawberry too then lol, is there such thing as a spirit plant?? <3

YES! Mine is a dandelion :) Your could most definitely be a strawberry.

Daww go little guy! You can do it!

Your garden is doing wonderful! SO full of great vegetables!

Thanks @goldendawne! I haven't tried growing through the winter so I am really happy with the amount I can still grow. Thanks for reading my post.

Surprized by the fact the strawberries are doing ok in the winter. Awesome update :)

Thanks Adrian! They seem to do fine in frost but not ground freezes, we don't get a lot of ground freezes.

I always love to come and see what you are up to!! :-D
I like your love of the garden and natural food, I feel that way too!!
I'm a huge lover of your champion broccoli!!
Big hugs x0x0x

Thanks @paradise-found! Brocolli is awesome, I love experimenting with growing plants. It is a rewarding, soothing task.
Big Hugs! xoxoxox

Ah great point! In some ways, especially for city gardening, I think that part is probably the more important asset of tending a garden, more so than saving money growing your own food (which I don't think most of us city ppl actually do anyway lol)

"Even so, I am still able to eat a little everyday from the garden, something that grounds me and brings me great joy."

BTW, how do you protect against those white moths laying eggs in the broccoli? I tried using a net a few years back and they still managed to get in there!!!

Amazing thing about those moths this year in the garden. I had a bunch of mean wasps that patrolled my garden in pure fury. They where ruthless. I watched them tear apart a potato bug, which I don't like but felt bad watching. Anyways these mean wasps demolished any worm that was eating plants in my garden. I left them to their murderous ways and I didn't have to worry about handling the white moths. It was awesome.

It is important when we are in a world made by humans (city or urban setting) to make it a priority to connect with the soil and the pace of natural things. We expect things instantly in this society, natures timing is much different. And it is closer to your own timing as well.

Thanks for reading my blog @jaybird.

jeez. I guess that's the natural order of things...I actually like bees and wasps so long as they aren't all up in my face. You probably couldn't have asked for better protectors of your garden TBH.

Those moths totally ruined my Broccoli the year i grew it.

Yeah, those moths suck.

Looks like you're doing great! Wonderful garden. Keep up the good work, @lifemovedbysteem!

Thank you so much @hethur240! I hope all is well on your homestead as well :) Thanks for checking out my update.
