Spring Melt And Unexpected Problems

in #homesteading8 years ago (edited)

Spring time!
It's been a long time coming already. We're quite excited to get this snow gone so we can start focusing on getting the yard ready this year.
Been a lot of snow around here on the prairies so while last year our sloughs dried up, this year we're hesitant but excited to welcome the excess amounts of water.

My husband took these on the road today. Great that the water is here but no so great as it's wrecking the roads.

Our dugout is quite full this year and we still have a bunch of snow yet to melt.

Wasn't able to get the garden completely put away before the snow fell last year with myself being pregnant with a toddler working a fulltime job an hour away and my husband working a fulltime job plus often overtime over an hour away.
I'm staying home this summer while my husband works two jobs to support our family so I'll be getting right to this as soon as this snow is gone. Still got quite a bit yet.

Even our burn pit is full. This burn pit is 5 feet deep.

So tonight we decided to have a lovely problem - our septic pump is running but not pumping any water. Lucky us it backed up into our basement tonight.

We were able to get it drained enough to not have it running into the basement any more tonight.
Bout 11:25pm right now, my husband and I are both exhausted so tomorrow we'll be trying to pump it more to see what's going on down there.
Poor timing of this all, but such is life on a homestead.
