The Potatoes Are Coming Up!

Hey everyone! I hope all is well. Today, I wanted to take time to show how one of our vegetables in our garden is doing. That vegetable is our potatoes.

Now to most, this may not seem like a big deal to have potatoes shoots starting to come through the ground, but for us this year, it is a big deal. There are a couple of reasons. The first is that we cut the potatoes and immediately put them in the ground. We do not like to do this and prefer to let the potatoes scab over for a day or two before they go in the ground, but because of the weather we had to put them in freshly cut. In our experiences, if the potatoes did not scab over good, then they could rot in the ground and then all the hard work of planting them was for nothing.

The second reason is was a bigger deal was because we were applying some alfalfa pellets to just about everything in our garden as a fertilizer and potatoes were no exception. So far, it seems to really be helping because we do not remember our potatoes ever coming up this fast. So, we are hoping that this is a good sign for what is to come. Hopefully, by the end of the year, I will have a better idea as to what plants alfalfa pellets are really helping to make some recommendations, but for now the potatoes seem to really be enjoying it.

Thanks for reading and stopping by!

Plants initially seem to do well with lots of nitrogen. But what happens is they grow very fast and they do not reach the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stages of health. When that happens, they are susceptible to diseases and pests LOVE them. So i'll be curious to see how the crop does over the season.

My potatoes are just up also, but this year I did manage to get them cut ahead, after chitting them for several weeks. So they dried out before planting.

Yeah we would have liked to let ours scab over, but we were facing lots of rain at the time and our potatoes were late getting in the ground.

With the alfalfa meal, at least from what I have read, is a good source of nitrogen, but it we used it in moderation. Since we put no other form of organic fertilizer, we wanted to experiment with several of our plants to see if it made a difference. The disease and pests are something we are going to have to watch for. We really wanted to see how it would do, especially on our corn that requires a lot of nitrogen. We have been using a high non-natural based fertilizer on our corn, so we are looking for ways to move away from that.
