The New Additions To Our Herd Are Here!

These last few days, we have been extremely busy. The weather is starting to get cooler and we have been trying to take advantage of it. Also, we have been working out in our barn a lot, trying to move things around and make room for a few square bales of hay. The other reason why we have been moving things, like gates, around in our barn lot is because we needed to make more room. We were having five heifers shipped to our house to add to the herd.

These last couple of weeks we have been waiting in anticipation for their arrival and they finally arrived just a few days ago. They, like our others, are Dexter cattle. They are shorter in stature and are a dark red color. The gentlemen that we purchased them from informed us that they came from a long line of cattle with good utters, which will work out when we want to start making things like butter or cheese. Also like our other cattle, they are bred and due next spring. So needless to say, we are very excited for next spring to come.

The reason why we purchased a few more heifers is because we have a bull. It did not seem economical for us to feed a bull for 4 cows, so we decided to pick up a few more. They came from a few states over, so they will be spending the next couple of days getting used to the pastures and the barn. Hopefully, we will be able to get some better pictures in the coming weeks.

Beautiful.

How's the Dexter temperament? I was looking into them because of their dual purpose but some breeders said they could be 'difficult' - making up for their size, perhaps.

As with any animal, there are ones are ones that are really friendly and ones that are not. It also makes a difference if they are older or younger. If you get younger ones, then you can work with them which will make them friendlier. As for our cattle, we have had good luck and we can go out in the pastures with them. We have ours for about a year and we are glad that we have gotten them.
