The Miracle Of Life On The Homestead (Caution: There Is 1 Picture Of A Cow Giving Birth)

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

Spring is symbolized by new life and new beginnings. Well that is what this post is going to be about, new life on the homestead. Calving season is finally upon us and I know several fellow steemians here have been talking about their calves coming and ours are finally starting to arrive. On Wednesday of this week, one of ours has finally started the whole process. It is both an exciting and stressful time.

The last several days we have been watching one cow who has been exhibiting signs that she could give birth soon. It all happened very fast and in the matter of just a couple of just a couple of minutes her water broke and she had the calf. Well at about 9 p.m. on Wednesday, she gave birth to a little baby girl. We have the momma and her baby sectioned off to give her time to bond with the calf and see how she will do as a first time mother.

Over the last year or two, we switched breeds and have a relatively young and new herd. It consists of about 8 mainly first time heifers, so we are keeping a close eye on them to make sure everything goes smoothly. To get to see the miracle of birth is an amazing experience to witness and should be celebrated. The breed that we are currently raising are called Dexters. If you haven’t heard of them and are thinking about getting a homesteading cow, I would recommend checking into them.

Now that it has been a couple of days, the calf is up and healthy and that is all that matters. The funny part is that the mother is Dun (Brown), her father is Red, and the calf is Black. We have all the colors of the Dexter breed in just two generations. We are expecting two more to start calving very soon, so if you enjoyed seeing the new addition to the herd stay tuned.

Thanks for reading and stopping by!

Congratulations!!! Beautiful calf

Thanks! She is a beautiful calf.

Happy Sunday! This comment is to inform you that your article has been linked/featured in the most recent issue of the Weekly Homesteading Newsletter! Thank you and have a great day!

Fun times! I love watching birth!

They are fun times indeed! Getting to watch the whole process is really cool to see, especially when their instincts to take care of them afterwards kicks in.

We are thinking when the times comes it will be Dexters for us too. They are great and we want to get milk and beef from them.

They are great and I would highly recommend them! Great personal little cattle for homesteaders and small families. We have yet to get milk from them, but we are planning to this year and hopefully next year we will be getting some beef.

Yes, there is nothing like fresh milk. I miss it from when I was younger, cold glass of milk and some fresh baked cookies. Nothing better!

That must be an incredible and beautiful to see. I'm sure it was also stressful but at the same time maybe you have been around that kind of thing before. You mentioned switching bread recently.

Beautiful!

It is an amazing experience for sure! I have been through this many times in the past, but it can still be a little stressful for first time mothers. It does get easier every year and if we use a bull with low birth weights then that also helps :)

Ooh forgot to reply!!!

I guess practice makes perfect... or less stressful!
