Solar Fence Charger For The Homestead

Over the last several months, we have been looking for ways to increase our self-sufficiency and reduce our electricity bill (with plans to be entirely independent from the electric company). Little things will eventually add up and will make your bill soar. For example, last year we switched our light bulbs to LED which helped a little, but we are still looking reduce our bill further.

With our cattle, we use a fence charger. The outside perimeter is made by cattle panels, but then we use electric fence to separate the pasture off. Our fence charger was acting a little sporadic, so we started looking into getting another one. When we were going to some local farm stores, we saw that they had a solar fence charger and thought we would give it a try.

They have chargers that will supply the needs of various fence sizes. The package told us that we needed to let it sit out in the sun for a couple of days before use, so that it would have time to charge up its battery. Then after that we placed the fence charger in a place alongside our fence, so that it would get a good amount of sun. It seems that it has worked very well and we have not had any of our cows go through it.

We have been using it for a couple of months now and we have been very happy with the results. While the initial cost is more than the conventional fence chargers, we feel that it is a good investment and good addition to our homestead. With the continual increase in electricity prices, I think that it is just another step for us in becoming more self-sufficient and heading toward our goal of reducing our reliance on the electric company.
