Warm Weather Garden Update

in #homesteading5 years ago (edited)

Our lil Gypsy souls can't stay still for long so we decided to travel to Seattle to visit family. It was our first time visiting Washington state. It was AMAZING, to say the least. The air smells so sweet and fresh, snow top mountain views, rivers, marinas, oceans all around, parks and tons of outdoor things to do, deep culture of downtown, rooftop gardens, city, nature, you name it, they have it. It appears to be a very family oriented state as well. It's a place I will definitely be visiting again.

While our trip was amazing, it is always nice to come home after an adventure. My sister stayed at the homestead watching over things while we were gone. She did a great job tending the animals and gardens. I was so happy and surprised when we walked the garden to see all the changes. Here are a few updated pictures. It's starting to pick up the pace....still a lot more to go. ;)

In these pictures, you will see some of our lettuce and salad veggies that we like in the warmer months. You'll notice we have a variety of vegetables for salads. Variety is important not just nutritionally but also because some might to better then others and having a variety in the garden will allow you to keep a flow of fresh veggies to eat. I love polyculture gardening and spread my plants out all over the place. I don't do to many rows of things....often I integrate a variety of plants in together. The varieties in the pictures below are kicking butt without getting bitter or bolting so easily. It's still only in the mid 70's/low 80's but I know from past experience that these types will do well even in mid to upper 80's, and some even beyond that. We have Red Leaf Romaine, Tango Lettuce, Red Curly Leaf Lettuce, Giant Red Mustards, Collards, Red-Veined Sorrel, Nasturtiums (if you didn't know, the leaves are edible like spinach and the flowers add a nice spice and pop of color to your salad), Longevity Spinach (gynura procumbens), and a few others. Right now in our zone, it's been in the upper 70's and low to mid-'80s. Once it gets hotter some of the lettuce types will benefit from filtered sun or part shade. Other salad veggie options that do well once the temps get in the upper 80's and beyond are Vegetable Red Leaf Amaranth, Perpetual Spinach, Yukon Savoy, Summer Mizuna, edible sweet potato vine, Roselle ( Hibiscus sabdariffa) have edible leaves, and so many more options! These are just a few. I'll post a link below to another reference page on some names/types of heat tolerant lettuce and tips on growing lettuce through the warmer and even hot months. Of course don't forget about your cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, onions, etc. ;) Take a look at our updated pictures and leave some comments below of your favorite warm/hot weather salad veggy to grow! I'll be doing an updated video tour real soon so stay tuned!! ;)

With lots of love

Here are some pictures of our Red Curly Leaf Lettuce. We harvest just two or three outer leaves off of each plant every few days. This helps the plant keep growing and also allows enough variety in your salad if you do this for a variety of vegetable options. We have about 15 of these plants.

Here is the Tango Lettuce. I LOVE this lettuce. Buttery and sweet! Not a hint of bitter. We have about 6 of these left and a bunch of babies coming up.

Here are some young Red Leaf Romaine. We only have 3 heads growing but more seeds went in so we will be growing more of these.

Here is one of our young collard plants looking fab. We have 4 plants in the garden right now.

Young Giant Red Mustard plants in filtered sun are doing well. We have 4 or 5 of these.

Red-Veined Sorrel in full sun. These have been in since spring of 2018. We have 6 of these.

Some other beautiful things going on in the food forest....comfrey has begun flowering, apple trees are blooming, grapes are graping (lol), walking onions are bulbing, strawberries are coming in, and so much more.

What an amazing garden you have @kindredacres😉 the strawberries look beautiful too. I can imagine how fresh the salad you'll have with everything wonderful from your own food stocks😉

Thank you so much! It's a work in progress. :) Lots more to come. ;)

Oh my goodness, I thought I commented but I just realized I didn't! You have so many wonderful greens! I would be in heaven making all kinds of yummy salads with those. I'm pretty lucky with lots of great selections at the farmers market (especially from the hydroponic farmers), but to have this many varieties in our own garden would make my little heart so happy. :) Looks like you are going to have some yummy strawberries soon. Love your grapes that are graping, too. Haha!

@Plantstoplanks thank you! I am a big fan of polyculture gardening. I have a big mix of all sorts of things. It brings diversity to our diet, a big variety of nutrients, flavors, etc. It also helps with pest issues. :)
