Jacob Goes Off Grid Day 120 Part 1
This is a video from Day 120 of going off-grid. I went 'off grid' six hundred and thirty-eight days ago and it has been quite the journey since I got dropped off at this old fallow farm and built (continue to build) all my own infrastructure. I have been video documenting the entire process and have just recently begun publicly sharing some of the videos. I have been sharing the videos privately since I started the entire process which I call Jacob Goes Off Grid In The Woods. 'Day 1' is the morning after I arrived at this little place in the mountains in the 'dead of winter' on January thirteenth of two thousand and seventeen with my dogs, my wits, minimal gear and very little hard currency to work with. Slowly I have done my best to breathe life into a very old farm and give it all my best, 'learning as I go', and documenting the process as best I can. This video is rather dark because it was getting dark outside but I still wanted to make the video for the day.
I talk about the area where I was thinking to make a wood lot for storing and cutting up firewood.
I talk about spending roughly six hours cutting down the vegetation in the potential wood lot area. I talk about how the folks from down the road showed up with a tractor and cleared a bunch more of the area for me by using the bucket on the tractor to scrape down the vegetation.
I talk about having the folks with the tractor pushing a bunch of logs and all the vegetation into a large berm that angles across the field at about a thirty degree angle to the creek.
I talk about a place where the folks with the tractor dug out a bunch of topsoil for me and how I might use the area as another compost.
I talk about using a bunch of the rocks and other debris from the area where the topsoil was retrieved from to fill in an area below it where there were a lot of holes in the ground.
I talk about how the area in the field that was cleared with the tractor in forty minutes would have taken me two days of cutting with the swing blade to accomplish.
As always this is just a summary of the video's content and not meant to explain everything that I cover in the video.
