Jacob Goes Off Grid Day 125 Part 1

in #homesteading6 years ago

This is a video from Day 125 of going off-grid. I went 'off grid' six hundred and forty days ago and it has been quite the journey since I got dropped off at this old fallow farm and built (continue to build) all my own infrastructure. I have been video documenting the entire process and have just recently begun publicly sharing some of the videos. I have been sharing the videos privately since I started the entire process which I call Jacob Goes Off Grid In The Woods. 'Day 1' is the morning after I arrived at this little place in the mountains in the 'dead of winter' on January thirteenth of two thousand and seventeen with my dogs, my wits, minimal gear and very little hard currency to work with. Slowly I have done my best to breathe life into a very old farm and give it all my best, 'learning as I go', and documenting the process as best I can. It has been quite the journey so far. @jacobpeacock

In this video I show where cleaned out more of the vegetation under the large black locust grove.

I talk about finding a total of five rolls of hog wire and fifty-two fence posts under a bunch of vegetation. I show where I stacked the fence posts up off the ground and put the rolls of hog wire on top of them so that the wire will not rust and the posts can dry out. I talk about how the posts themselves are full of old nails and pieces of wire and how if I use them then I will need to remove the wire and nails from them.

I talk about an area near the black locust grove where there is a lot of briers, honeysuckle and multi-flora and how I might just leave it alone as a potential berry patch. I mention how the multi-flora berries are high in vitamin C and rather tasty.

I talk about how while I was clearing brush I disturbed a large black snake and how it climbed up a tree in front of me.

I talk about not wanting to work on the kudzu again that day because I wanted a break from working in the direct sun.

I show the kudzu patch and my progress on removing it and talk about needing to stay on cutting it back because it grows so fast.

I talk about moving my black locust trees out of the cold frame green house because it seemed like they were not doing that well inside of it because it was getting too hot inside of it.

As always this is just a summary of the video's content and not meant to explain everything that I cover in the video.
