Jacob Goes Off Grid Day 135 Part 1

in #homesteading6 years ago

This is a video from Day 135 of going off-grid. I went 'off grid' six hundred and forty-five days ago and it has been quite the journey since I got dropped off at this old fallow farm and built (continue to build) all my own infrastructure. I have been video documenting the entire process and have just recently begun publicly sharing some of the videos. I have been sharing the videos privately since I started the entire process which I call Jacob Goes Off Grid In The Woods. 'Day 1' is the morning after I arrived at this little place in the mountains in the 'dead of winter' on January thirteenth of two thousand and seventeen with my dogs, my wits, minimal gear and very little hard currency to work with. Slowly I have done my best to breathe life into a very old farm and give it all my best, 'learning as I go', and documenting the process as best I can. It has been quite the journey so far. @jacobpeacock

In this video I talk about using my new DC to DC cordless tool battery charger to charge up my batteries.

I show where I started building a roof over the dog kennel that I assembled the previous day.

I talk about how even small skinny black locust is really strong. It is worth noting that the black locust that I am building with is not 'green' and has cured and also had the bark removed from it.

I talk about possibly stacking firewood beside the kennel (between two of the posts that support the roof) so that the dog will have more shade but I also say that before adding the firewood I am going to wait and see how much shade is created by the roof once it is finished.

I talk about making the roof overhang the door/gate of the kennel so that if it is raining I do not have to stand in the rain as I fumble the latch open on the gate.

I talk about making sure the roof is at least six feet six inches off the ground all the way around. Which gives it enough 'head room' that even a tall person will not hit their head on it.

I talk about how the dogs seem to all be getting along well. I talk about rotating the new dog between having her in the kennel, having her on a lead outside the kennel, and letting her run around with the other dogs.

As always this is just a summary of the video's content and not meant to explain everything that I cover in the video.
