Jacob Goes Off Grid Day 127 Part 1

in #homesteading6 years ago

This is a video from Day 127 of going off-grid. I went 'off grid' six hundred and forty-two days ago and it has been quite the journey since I got dropped off at this old fallow farm and built (continue to build) all my own infrastructure. I have been video documenting the entire process and have just recently begun publicly sharing some of the videos. I have been sharing the videos privately since I started the entire process which I call Jacob Goes Off Grid In The Woods. 'Day 1' is the morning after I arrived at this little place in the mountains in the 'dead of winter' on January thirteenth of two thousand and seventeen with my dogs, my wits, minimal gear and very little hard currency to work with. Slowly I have done my best to breathe life into a very old farm and give it all my best, 'learning as I go', and documenting the process as best I can. It has been quite the journey so far. @jacobpeacock

In this video I show where the owner of the property brought out a tractor and bush-hog attachment and mowed down a large area of the field where the black locust groves are.

I talk about how he also took me out to a store in an adjacent town and purchased a brand new chainsaw for me to be able to use around the farm. I do not say in the video what type of chainsaw but it was a Stihl Farm Boss MS-271. He also purchased two 'aggressive' chains for it at my request because I am not found of the cutting ability of 'limited kick back' chains. Note A limited kick-back chain is more commonly called a 'safety' chain.

I talk about how large the area mowed with the bush-hog was and mention how there are still a lot of briers (and other plants) on the ground that the bush-hog just knocked over or left pieces of everywhere. In other words even though the area got mowed there would still be a lot to clean up.

I talk about how the area I am making the video in is where I had been considering making a more permanent homestead site and point out some of it's features.

I talk about needing to cut back a lot of the vegetation around the potential homestead site so that I can reveal the terrain and see what is what. I do not state it in the video but the main reason I want to reveal the terrain is so that I can see how the water flows across the ground when it rains.

Note: This video gets cut short because I drop the phone and it bumped the camera button when it fell.

As always this is just a summary of the video's content and not meant to explain everything that I cover in the video.

Tip: If you have trouble viewing the video you can always right-click the video and click 'Save Video As...' and download it directly.

I want to do the same :D

You should do it then and document the entire process. :)
