Update on the Watermelon Patch

Very excited about how well our Watermelon Patch is doing this year! I counted at leats 17 watermelons in a 20 by 20 foot area. When compared to last years Watermelons I couldn't be happier since we didn't get a single one in 2017.

So what did we do differently this year to get our Watermelons to grow?

This year we started the watermelon seeds in seed starting trays. Last year we planted the seeds directly in the ground. Starting the seeds in the trays gave us the chance to start the plants earlier. We were also able to keep a closer eye on the plants to see if the needed more or less water.

Another difference from last year was how we prepared the ground where we planted the mellons. The main difference this year was we covered the ground with cardboard and about 6-8 inches of mulch. I think this helped because the ground cover held the water/moisture in the ground instead of it evaporating away. Watermelons need a lot of water to grow so the ground cover made sure that the plants didn't lose the precious water they need.

If you have any tips on growing watermelons I would love to hear them!

Congrats on the harvest. We would always get tons of large congo watermelons but many of them would end up splitting when we would get lots and lots of rain. Now they grow wild all over our hog pens since we were feeding many of the melons to them. Nothing hogs love more then a watermelon in a ice water bath till it gets cold in the hot summer.
